Tens of Twitter accounts of major companies and individuals have been hacked in one of the most widespread and confounding compromises on the platform in recent times, in a bid to promote a bitcoin scam that appears to be earning its creator quite a bit of money.
The account unusual activities appear to have been stopped, but new scam tweets were posting to verified accounts on a regular basis for more than two hours.
Twitter on its support account wrote, “We are aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter. We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly.”
Twitter also updated it was limiting posting activities from verified accounts, “We’re continuing to limit the ability to Tweet, reset your password, and some other account functionalities while we look into this. Thanks for your patience.”
“As we continue working on a fix, this functionality may come and go.”
