The National Assembly was thrown into disarray today morning following explosive claims by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi regarding the alleged abduction of Gabriel Oguda, a prominent social media activist and policy analyst associated with his office.
The revelation has sparked intense debate within Parliament, highlighting grave concerns about civil liberties in the country.
Speaker Moses Wetangula swiftly reacted to the crisis by instructing Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa to urgently contact Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome for immediate information on Oguda’s whereabouts within the next two hours.
“I direct the Majority Leader to liaise with the IG and verify the status of the officer allegedly operating at the Minority Leader’s office and report back,” Speaker Wetangula declared during a tense session.
The directive follows mounting pressure from opposition members demanding swift action and accountability. “We will protect your staff under my watch, but those who violate the law will face consequences,” Wetangula emphasized.
Wandayi, visibly moved, detailed the distressing circumstances surrounding Oguda’s disappearance during his emotional address to the Assembly. According to Wandayi, Oguda contacted him at 2:20 am, reporting that unidentified police officers were forcibly entering his home.
“He called me in great distress, saying police were breaking into his home. Ten minutes later, my calls to him were intercepted,” Wandayi recounted.
Efforts to locate Oguda in various Nairobi police stations have so far been fruitless, leaving Wandayi and his colleagues deeply concerned.
In a passionate plea to the Assembly, Wandayi demanded immediate action for Oguda’s release or, at minimum, his presentation in court if charges exist.
“This cannot be business as usual. If this can happen to a member of my staff, it threatens the independence of our Parliament,” Wandayi asserted.
The Minority Leader’s revelations have raised serious questions about the government’s adherence to legal rights and due process. Wandayi criticized authorities for failing to disclose reasons for Oguda’s arrest or granting him access to legal representation.
Majority Leader Ichung’wa echoed these concerns, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and promising swift investigation and resolution.
The unfolding debate underscores broader anxieties following reports of similar incidents involving other individuals. The Assembly remains on edge as developments in Oguda’s case unfold amidst calls for justice and accountability.
The Speaker adjourned the session amid calls for continued vigilance and respect for the rule of law, promising updates as the situation develops.
