In a momentous site visit to Sama, a trailblazing data annotation solutions provider powering the AI models of tomorrow, the Government of Kenya, in collaboration with the State Department for Industrialization, took a groundbreaking step towards embracing the transformative potential of AI. At the heart of this visit was the reaffirmation of the Government’s commitment to adapt labour laws and regulations to accommodate the seamless integration of AI technologies across industries.

Dr. Juma Mukhawana, the visionary Principal Secretary of the State Department for Industrialization, led the charge in highlighting the significance of rewriting labor laws to usher in the era of AI-driven progress. Recognizing that the current labour laws were crafted in a different technological landscape, the Government is now on a mission to collaborate closely with industry stakeholders, including Sama, to modernize these laws and align them with the rapidly evolving digital economy.

“AI presents an unprecedented opportunity to revolutionize our nation’s industries and unleash a wave of innovation and economic growth. To fully harness Kenya’s potential in the digital age, it is imperative to create a legal framework that encourages the adoption of AI and fosters a conducive environment for businesses to thrive,” Dr. Mukhawana asserted.

The present digital economy has witnessed the rapid ascent of AI as a transformative force globally. Kenya, with its rich pool of talent and robust infrastructure, has been a magnet for global tech companies like Sama. However, the Government has realized that to fully capitalize on the potential of AI, a supportive legal framework is paramount.

By rewriting labor laws to embrace AI integration, Kenya aims to position itself as a trailblazer in AI adoption in Africa. The move will bolster the AI-powered Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector, facilitating the development of cutting-edge AI systems that power critical industries such as automotive, retail, agriculture, and food technology.

During the visit, Lilian Kiplang’at, the Director of Global Service Delivery at Sama, highlighted the significance of this pivotal moment. She emphasized that the Government’s commitment to updating labor laws for AI integration signals a strong partnership that will propel Kenya into a digital powerhouse and a key player in the global AI landscape.

“The transformational potential of AI is immense, and it serves as a catalyst for job creation and economic advancement in Kenya. With the right regulatory environment, we have the capacity to create thousands of jobs by 2024,” Kiplang’at expressed optimistically. “Collaborating with the Government to develop forward-looking policies will pave the way for a thriving AI ecosystem in Kenya, driving competitiveness on the global stage.”

Sama’s continuous presence in Kenya for the past 15 years has been a testament to the nation’s potential in AI development. The company has been instrumental in providing quality formal jobs for Kenyans and contributing significantly to advancements in AI technology in various sectors, such as self-driving cars, virtual reality gaming consoles, fashion segmentation, and agricultural solutions for crop disease protection.

A recent groundbreaking achievement by Sama is the introduction of Platform 2.0, a state-of-the-art computer vision platform designed to minimize machine learning algorithm failures. This redesigned platform, including SamaIQ™, SamaAssure™, and SamaHub™, has set a new industry standard with an impressive 99% client acceptance rate for AI training data through SamaAssure.

With the Government’s progressive approach and the concerted efforts of industry stakeholders, Kenya is well on its way to crafting a future that embraces AI, leverages its full potential, and empowers the nation to lead the charge in the global AI revolution. The journey has just begun, and Kenya is determined to seize the opportunities that AI presents for sustainable growth and prosperity.
