Microsoft Corporation and G42 have announced a transformative $1 billion digital investment initiative in Kenya. This comprehensive package, developed in collaboration with the Republic of Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, aims to accelerate Kenya’s digital transformation and position it as a leader in the digital economy of East Africa.
Key Components of the Investment
G42, in conjunction with Microsoft and other stakeholders, will lead the investment, with priorities including the construction of a state-of-the-art green data centre in Olkaria, Kenya. This centre, to be powered entirely by renewable geothermal energy, will host Microsoft Azure services within a newly established East Africa Cloud Region. The data centre is expected to become operational within 24 months of the signing of the definitive agreements.
The initiative also includes four additional pillars to be pursued with local partners:
- Local-Language AI Model Development and Research: Development of AI models in Swahili and English to meet Kenya’s unique cultural and linguistic needs.
- East Africa Innovation Lab and Digital Skills Training: Establishment of an innovation lab in Nairobi to support startups and entrepreneurs, coupled with extensive digital skills training programmes.
- International and Local Connectivity Investments: Expansion of internet connectivity through marine and terrestrial fibre cable infrastructure and last-mile wireless internet access, aiming to reach 20 million people in Kenya and 50 million across East Africa by 2025.
- Secure Cloud Services Collaboration: Working with the Kenyan government to ensure safe and secure cloud services across East Africa.
Formalizing the Partnership
The formal relationship will be solidified through a letter of intent signed on Friday during Kenyan President William Ruto’s state visit to the United States. This visit marks the first state visit to Washington, D.C. by a sitting African head of state in nearly two decades. The agreement, signed by Microsoft, G42, and Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, has received support from the governments of the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
Statements from Leaders
President William Ruto expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “This partnership is bigger than technology itself. It is about coming together of three countries with a common vision of a nation empowered by technology, where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive in the global digital landscape. It’s about building a future where Kenya flourishes as a digital leader.”
Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, highlighted the significance of the investment, saying, “This represents the single largest and broadest digital investment in Kenya’s history and reflects our confidence in the country, the government, its people and the future of East Africa.”
Peng Xiao, Group CEO of G42, remarked, “By establishing a green data centre and developing AI tailored to the local culture, G42 is committed to fostering sustainable technological growth. This initiative will empower the Kenyan government and communities with robust, secure cloud services and AI capabilities.”
Innovative AI and Societal Services
To further support Kenya’s growth, G42 is developing an open-source AI model in Swahili and English. Microsoft and G42 will enhance collaboration with local universities and research institutes, including the Microsoft Africa Research Institute and the Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. The AI for Good Lab in Nairobi will address economic and societal priorities, such as food security and climate resilience, using advanced AI techniques.
Support for Startups and Entrepreneurs
The East African Innovation Lab in Nairobi will offer resources and support for startups and entrepreneurs to develop cloud and AI services. Microsoft and G42 will provide digital and AI skills training to government employees, cybersecurity skilling for over 2,000 individuals annually, and business skills programmes for young entrepreneurs.
Enhancing Connectivity and Digital Safety
The initiative will significantly enhance Kenya’s connectivity infrastructure. G42 will leverage its UAE ecosystem to support Kenya’s international and domestic fibre cable development, while Microsoft will expand wireless internet access. Microsoft and G42 will also collaborate with the Kenyan government to ensure data safety, privacy, and security, establishing a “trusted data zone” for secure cloud services.
This landmark partnership between Microsoft, G42, and the Republic of Kenya marks a significant step towards a digitally empowered future, fostering technological innovation and economic growth across East Africa.
