In a historic move, Microsoft unveils a new addition to the Windows PC keyboard for the first time in three decades. The introduction of the “Copilot key” nestled between the alt key and the left arrow key marks a significant shift towards embracing artificial intelligence within everyday computing tasks.

Designed to seamlessly integrate Microsoft’s AI tools into users’ workflows, the Copilot key aims to alleviate the burden of mundane or complex tasks, ranging from summarizing lengthy emails to generating AI-driven stock images for presentations. However, it’s essential to note that while this key introduces AI assistance, the responsibility for tasks remains with the user.

This development signifies a departure from the last significant keyboard alteration—the introduction of the Windows key in 1994, primarily used to access the start menu. The Copilot key’s integration into upcoming devices, set to be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show, hints at its widespread adoption in the near future, beginning from late February.

Microsoft views this innovation as a transformative step towards the “AI PC” era, aimed at empowering users to readily engage with AI-driven tools. By invoking Copilot within the Windows experience, the Copilot key aims to streamline day-to-day activities, marking a pivotal moment in Windows’ evolution.

However, it’s important to note that while the Copilot key is a significant leap forward, its availability remains limited. Devices lacking access to Copilot will open Windows Search upon pressing the key.
