Radisson Hotel Group has announced the opening of Africa’s first Verified Net Zero hotel in Hoedspruit, South Africa, as part of its efforts to promote sustainable hospitality across the continent.
Located in Limpopo province, near Kruger National Park, the 138-room Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit has adopted renewable energy, electrified operations and sustainable waste management practices to reduce its environmental impact.
The hotel operates on 100 per cent renewable electricity, combining on-site solar generation with renewable energy procurement. It has also introduced electric kitchen equipment, heat pumps for hot water and electric utility vehicles to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Other initiatives include recycling all wastewater through an on-site treatment plant, reducing single-use plastics and introducing carbon-labelled menus to help guests make more environmentally conscious dining choices.
Speaking on the development, Tim Cordon, Chief Operating Officer for Middle East, Africa and South East Asia Pacific at Radisson Hotel Group, said the milestone demonstrates how existing hotels can transition towards more sustainable operations.
“The hotel demonstrates how investment in renewable electricity, electrification and everyday operational changes can reduce environmental impact while maintaining a compelling guest experience,” Cordon said.
The hotel’s net zero credentials have been independently verified by TÜV Rheinland, with the programme covering direct emissions, purchased energy and emissions associated with hotel operations and supply chains. Remaining emissions are addressed through carbon removal credits.
The development supports Radisson Hotel Group’s ambition to establish 100 Verified Net Zero hotels globally by 2030, extending the initiative from the UK and Nordic markets into Africa.
