Deputy President William Ruto has condemned Tuesday’s decision by the Kenya Revenue Authority to shut down operations at Keroche Breweries Limited.
The DP claimed that the move is politically motivated and is aimed at punishing its founder Tabitha Karanja for choosing to associate with Kenya Kwanza coalition.
“They have closed Keroche a company with more than 400 employees, which is approximately 3000 families benefiting from the company. We also have distributors who are affected by the closure.” Ruto claimed
“Her only mistake is because she refused to join Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.” he added
The DP who was touring Kisii region to drum up support for his Presidential bid alleged that politics had been injected into business and termed it unfortunate and that such a move had been ‘overtime by time.’
“I want to tell Kenyans that these people are anti-business. They want to destroy the businesses of the people of Kenya, they cannot tell us about investments, they cant tell us about business opportunities if they are destroying the business opportunities that exist today in Kenya.”
“Keroche is a big industrialist, she employs many Kenyans and gives business to many Kenyans. To say that her business has been closed because of her political persuasion is the worst form of impunity.” the DP claimed
KRA’s case against Keroche
KRA however insists that Keroche is guilty of going against an earlier agreed plan to repay tax arrears totaling to Ksh300m.
The authority went ahead to issue agency notices to several banks against lending the brewer fully paralyzing the operations of the company.
