Safaricom Ethiopia has announced a significant achievement, reaching 10 million 90-day active customers just four years after receiving its license to operate in the country. The milestone marks a major step in the company’s mission to drive Ethiopia’s digital transformation through inclusive and high-quality mobile connectivity.

In a statement, Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, emphasized the broader meaning of the accomplishment:
“Achieving an active customer base of 10 million is a significant milestone for us, but it also brings with it great responsibility. Behind each SIM card there is an individual, a family, a business, and a future. Our mission is to serve, enable, and support Ethiopia’s development through world-class connectivity and innovation.”

Since entering the Ethiopian market, Safaricom has invested over 300 billion ETB (USD 2.27 billion) in building telecom and digital financial infrastructure. Today, its fast 4G network covers more than half the country’s population, with 3,141 live sites in over 150 towns and cities.

Customer growth remains robust, with an average of 31,000 new users joining daily. The company’s mobile data service has also seen strong uptake, with 7.1 million active data users consuming an average of 6.5GB per month—an increase of 53% compared to the previous year.

Safaricom Ethiopia attributes its rapid growth not only to technology but to people. The company directly employs 900 staff, 97% of whom are Ethiopian, and has generated indirect employment for over 20,000 people through a wide network of partners and contractors.

Beyond business, Safaricom has made significant social investments. Over 100 million ETB has been allocated to support schools with laptops, routers, and free internet access. The company has also provided humanitarian assistance in times of crisis, supporting communities affected by fires, landslides, and earthquakes, and contributing to local organizations such as the Mekedonia Humanitarian Association.

“This milestone is more than just a number,” Vanhelleputte added. “It reflects the trust of the Ethiopian people, the collaboration of government and partners, and the dedication of thousands working toward a shared digital future.”

As Safaricom Ethiopia looks ahead, it reaffirms its commitment to being a reliable and impactful partner in the country’s ongoing digital journey.
