Samsung Electronics has marked 57 years since its establishment, celebrating its transformation from a consumer electronics manufacturer into one of the world’s leading technology companies.
As the company commemorated its Foundation Day on November 1, it reflected on decades of innovation spanning televisions, home appliances, smartphones, semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI).
Founded in 1969, Samsung began by manufacturing black-and-white televisions before expanding into household appliances and international markets. By the 1980s, the company had strengthened its research and development capabilities and ventured into personal computer production.
A major turning point came in 1988 when Samsung Electronics merged with Samsung Semiconductor & Telecommunications, bringing home appliances, telecommunications and semiconductor technologies under one business.
In 1992, Samsung developed the world’s first 64-megabit DRAM chip, strengthening its position in the global semiconductor industry. The company subsequently expanded its digital television business and became the world’s leading television brand by market share in 2006.
Samsung’s entry into the Android smartphone market with the Galaxy S series in 2010 marked another significant milestone, transforming how consumers communicate, work and access digital services.
The company continued expanding its product portfolio with QLED televisions, connected home technologies and foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Fold launched in 2019.
More recently, Samsung has increased its investment in artificial intelligence and advanced semiconductor technologies. In 2022, it began producing chips using a three-nanometre manufacturing process, while in 2023 it unveiled Samsung Gauss, its generative AI model.
In 2024, Samsung introduced advanced memory technologies designed to support AI applications, including 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM and 24GB GDDR7 DRAM.
The company was also ranked among Interbrand’s five most valuable global brands in 2024, with an estimated brand value of US$100.8 billion.
Beyond product innovation, Samsung says its business remains guided by five core values: People, Excellence, Change, Integrity and Co-prosperity.
As it enters its 58th year, Samsung is positioning artificial intelligence, connected devices, advanced computing and sustainability among the priorities shaping its next phase of growth.
