Uhuru Orders Reopening of Restaurants, Bars, Places of Worship

President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Saturday, May 1, during the Labour Day Celebrations made the order allowing bars and restaurants to reopen as the rate of new coronavirus infections slowly declines in the country.

The president further made other orders easing several strict measures earlier imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19.

President Uhuru also allowed resumption of in-person and congregational worship as per the Inter-Faith Council and Ministry of Health guidelines.

However, the attending congregation remains capped to one-third of the capacity of the place of worship.

Here is a summary of the orders made today by the president:

  1. President Uhuru Kenyatta lifts cessation of movement in and out of the zoned area. The zoned area comprised of Kiambu, Nakuru, Machakos, and Kajiado counties.
  2. Hours of curfew in the zoned area will be between 10 pm and 4 am beginning today midnight.
  3. In-person and congregational worship shall resume in strict compliance with the Inter-Faith Council guidelines and the Ministry of Health and shall not exceed a third of the capacity of places of worship.
  4. Operations of restaurants and eateries in the zoned area shall resume strict compliance issued by the government. The facilities are encouraged to utilize outdoor spaces to maximize physical and social distancing.
  5. All educational institutions in all levels of learning to reopen in accordance with the calendar issued by the Ministry of education.
  6. Resumption of sporting activities shall be guided by regulations to be issued by the Ministry of Health jointly with the Ministry of Sports.
  7. All bars in Kenya are to operate until 7 pm.
  8. Employers are encouraged to allow their workers to work at home with the exception of critical essential service providers who cannot work remotely.
  9. All hospitals are directed to limit the number of visitors for hospitalised patients to one visitor per patient per day.
  10. The prohibition of political gatherings is extended until otherwise directed.
  11. All other containment measures not captured in the above-revised measures remain in force.
