Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya have received a significant boost in digital payments following the launch of a new service enabling direct transfers from Airtel Money wallets to Absa Bank Kenya accounts. The partnership also allows customers to conveniently pay Absa merchant paybill accounts, enhancing efficiency for businesses and individuals alike.
The integration between Airtel Money and Absa Bank Kenya is set to transform how SMEs manage transactions by offering a faster, more reliable, and convenient way to move funds. The service targets everyday financial activities such as business payments, bill settlements, and seamless transfers using mobile phones—particularly benefiting users in rural and underserved areas where mobile money remains a primary financial tool.
“At Airtel Money, we believe in fostering collaborative digital partnerships that help power the economy, meeting the needs of customers in rural and underserved areas where mobile money remains the most accessible financial tool,” said Airtel Money Managing Director Anne Kinuthia-Otieno.
“As customers increasingly demand payment solutions that are simple, fast, and reliable, this partnership addresses long-standing friction points in digital payments, supporting the growth of small businesses and making digital payments work better for everyday life,” she added.
Enhanced Convenience for SMEs
The Airtel Money–Absa integration is designed to support both personal and business use. SMEs, in particular, stand to benefit from improved cash flow management and reduced transaction delays. Additionally, Airtel Money customers will enjoy up to 100% guaranteed cashback as airtime on all paybill payments, further incentivizing digital transactions.
Speaking during the partnership signing, Absa Bank Kenya Business Banking Director Renato D’Souza emphasized the importance of convenience and innovation for SMEs.
“As a growth partner for our customers, we champion innovation that fundamentally shifts how businesses operate. Today’s SMEs are not just looking for banking services; they want ecosystems that help them move faster, stay agile, and compete in a digital marketplace,” said D’Souza.
He added that the partnership empowers entrepreneurs with greater control and flexibility:
“By enabling seamless transfers from Airtel Money wallets into Absa accounts and simplifying payments to Absa merchant paybill numbers, we are giving entrepreneurs more control, more choice, and more efficiency in how they manage their cashflows.”
