Spotify has named Nigerian singer songwriter GoodGirl LA as its EQUAL Africa artist for November, recognising her growing influence and her distinctive blend of Afro fusion, R and B, and pop.
Born in Lagos, GoodGirl LA discovered her passion for music early, drawing inspiration from Michael Jackson, Whitney, and Britney Spears. Her path from childhood mimic performances to studio experimentation shaped a sound rooted in authenticity, independence, and artistic evolution. Her 2021 collaboration with Vector, Early Momo, became a national success and amassed millions of streams, firmly placing her among Nigeria’s rising talents.
The artist is preparing for the release of her comeback EP Goodgirl in 2025, a project she describes as a reflection of modern womanhood, combining strength, vulnerability, rebellion, and grace. Her message centres on the freedom for women to be multifaceted and fearless in their creative expression.
Spotify says her selection for EQUAL Africa speaks to the very qualities the initiative champions. “GoodGirl LA represents everything EQUAL Africa stands for, authenticity, courage, and growth,” said Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub Saharan Africa. “She is shaping a new narrative of what it means to be a woman making music in Nigeria, unapologetically herself, fiercely talented, and setting the tone for a new generation.”
GoodGirl LA says her artistry is anchored in raw honesty. For her, creativity is not about perfection, but about showing up, fighting for dreams, and owning one’s truth.
She shared more about her journey and personality, revealing that she spends a surprising amount of time on Substack and Pinterest. She also traced her musical destiny to her childhood, when she imitated her favourite performers and began writing lyrics in class before immersing herself in production and visual learning online. She cited Asa, 2baba, Psquare, Wizkid, and Brenda Fassie among the African artists she grew up listening to.
She described her sound as “sexy, ambitious and beautiful” and her style as an eclectic mix of avant garde, vintage grunge, and Y2K. To aspiring dreamers who feel hesitant, she advised an embrace of imperfection and the courage to push forward, saying life is “a fight for a knife in the mud” but that the act of creating ensures a win.
Reflecting on navigating the music industry as a woman, GoodGirl LA said she maintains focus on storytelling that resonates with women and continues to draw from the legacy of those who came before her. She added, “It is not just a male dominated world of music, it is a male dominated world, but I will never be less of a human because my organs are different, not happening, girl.” On joining the EQUAL programme, she said the timing aligns with her forthcoming music, which embraces fearless expression and a bold assertion of identity.
