Standard Chartered’s Global Market Outlook for the second half of 2024 presents a strategic roadmap for investors navigating a shifting economic landscape.

The report highlights key themes and recommendations designed to help investors adapt to anticipated changes and optimize returns.

Key Economic Turning Point: Central Bank Rate Cuts

A pivotal theme in the outlook is the anticipated commencement of significant central bank rate cuts. As policymakers pivot from controlling inflation to fostering economic growth, this shift is seen as a crucial moment for investors. Standard Chartered’s CIO underscores the importance of adjusting investment strategies in response to these policy changes.

Strategic Investment Recommendations

  1. Equities Over Bonds and Cash: The report advocates for an overweight position in equities relative to bonds and cash. This recommendation reflects the belief that equities are poised to deliver superior returns in the current economic climate.
  2. Regional Equity Preferences:
    • Global Focus: Emphasis is placed on US equities, which are expected to outperform other regions.
    • Asia Focus: Within Asia, Indian equities are highlighted as particularly promising.
  3. Diversification: To mitigate risk, the report recommends holding gold and Emerging Markets US Dollar bonds. These assets are suggested as effective diversifiers in the current investment environment.

Performance of Balanced Allocations

The report reveals that balanced portfolio allocations, which blend equities, bonds, and alternative assets, are outperforming income-focused strategies. Standard Chartered’s balanced allocation has risen by 6.7% year-to-date, significantly outperforming income-oriented strategies, which have seen a modest increase of 0.5%.

Sector-Specific Investment Insights

  1. United States: Investors are encouraged to focus on growth sectors such as technology and communication services.
  2. Europe: The report suggests a barbell strategy, emphasizing technology and healthcare sectors to align with an improving growth outlook.
  3. China: The outlook favors sectors benefiting from government policies, including technology, communication services, and consumer discretionary.

Long-Term Investment Philosophy

Manpreet Gill, Global Chief Investment Officer, highlights the importance of a long-term investment approach. “Staying invested for the long term, adapting to trend shifts, and seeking opportunistic ideas to enhance a diversified portfolio is our fundamental investment approach,” Gill says. He emphasizes that adapting to policy changes can help investors achieve optimal returns aligned with their long-term financial goals.

Client Perspectives in Kenya and East Africa

Paul Njoki, Head of Wealth and Affluent Banking for Kenya and East Africa, notes that while clients remain optimistic about economic opportunities, they are carefully monitoring how current events impact their wealth. Standard Chartered is committed to working closely with clients to understand their individual goals and risk tolerance, creating investment strategies that capitalize on diversification while providing protection.

SC Wealth Select Framework

The report also highlights Standard Chartered’s SC Wealth Select Framework, designed to help clients manage their wealth through a structured approach. Known as the Today, Tomorrow, Forever approach, this framework combines over a century of experience with real-time insights, guiding clients in growing, managing, and protecting their wealth across various time horizons.
