Mr. Philip Edwine Anayo has officially accepted his role as a Non-Executive Director (Co-Opted Member) of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Board. This appointment, confirmed by the KRU on August 14, 2025, marks a strategic step towards leveraging diverse expertise to propel Kenyan rugby to new heights.

Mr. Anayo’s tenure on the board is set for a two-year term, commencing on August 11, 2025, and running through August 10, 2027. His selection underscores the KRU’s intent to draw upon his extensive background in Commerce and Industry, aiming to inject fresh perspectives and robust strategies into the management and growth of the game.

In a statement released today, Mr. Anayo expressed his honor and privilege in joining the KRU Board. “It is a privilege to join the body entrusted with managing and growing the game of rugby in Kenya,” he stated. “I look forward to contributing my knowledge and experience in commerce and industry to support the Union’s vision and to strengthen the structures that will advance the sport at all levels.”

His commitment extends beyond mere oversight. Mr. Anayo emphasized his dedication to working collaboratively with his fellow board members to build upon the strong foundation of Kenyan rugby. His clear goals include ensuring national teams thrive on the global stage and, crucially, deepening the game’s reach and impact from grassroots communities upward. “My goal is to see our national teams excel on the world stage and to grow the game from the grassroots up. I am eager to get to work,” he affirmed.

A Proven Track Record in Rugby and Business

Philip Edwine Anayo brings a wealth of relevant experience to his new role. As a Director at Homeland Itoya Events, a prominent end-to-end event services provider with offices across Kenya, he is deeply entrenched in the commercial landscape. Notably, Homeland Itoya Events currently serves as the main sponsor for Kisumu Rugby Football Club (KRFC), demonstrating Mr. Anayo’s direct involvement and passion for the sport.

His dedication to rugby is further highlighted by his two-year tenure as Chairman of KRFC between 2018 and 2020. During this period, he is widely credited with securing high-value sponsorships that were instrumental in enabling the team’s full participation in the National 7s circuit without financial constraints. He also played a pivotal role in hosting highly successful Dala 7s tournaments, showcasing his ability to drive both financial stability and event excellence within the rugby community.

This appointment signals a clear intent from the Kenya Rugby Union to infuse its leadership with practical business acumen and a deep understanding of the sport’s ecosystem. As Mr. Anayo steps into this vital role, the Kenyan rugby fraternity looks forward to a period of renewed growth, enhanced competitiveness, and expanded reach for the beloved game.
