Spring Valley and Grevillea Grove are two of the quieter neighbourhoods in Nairobi. They are leafy and low-rise; the kind of streets where a four-bedroom villa doesn’t feel like a contradiction. Canaan Developers is building the Oaks Series across these two neighbourhoods: Whispering Oaks, a boutique collection of tri-level villas, and Enchanting Oaks, a larger sister development with its own pool, gym, and jogging paths.
Both are four-bedroom, tri-level homes and sit inside gated, landscaped grounds a few minutes from Westgate and Sarit Centre. What’s more interesting than the floor plans on paper is what those plans reveal about how Canaan Developers expects people to live in these houses.
“A villa gives a family space and privacy that an apartment cannot. You’re not sharing walls or a lobby with other households. When we build our villas, we are building for people who want their home to be a retreat first,” says Geoffrey Kimemia, Head of Project Management Unit at Canaan Developers Limited.
Stepping inside, the entrance sets the tone of space and scale. Both villas open into a double-height foyer, with a floating staircase as the first real design statement. It’s the kind of feature that makes a two-storey stairwell feel sculptural rather than only functional. From there, the ground floor unfolds as one continuous space, with the living and dining areas opening into that double-height lounge. What ties it together is a single run of windows framing the garden.
The main kitchen remains polished and guest-ready, while a separate chef’s kitchen and pantry bear the brunt of heavy cooking. It’s a small division of labour, but one that keeps the entertaining function of the kitchen separate from the working half.
As you move through the house, it opens outward. At Whispering Oaks in Spring Valley, the double-height lounge lets out onto terraces and private gardens, and the same glass facades that run the length of the ground floor blur the boundary between lounge and terrace.
Enchanting Oaks pushes this further with a courtyard in addition to its garden and terrace, plus a second entrance-facing outdoor terrace giving the house two distinct outdoor moods depending on which side you’re on.
“Green space has a very practical role in residential design,” Kimemia adds. “A well-designed outdoor area is another living space, not just something you look at through a window. The idea of luxury is becoming more nuanced. It is increasingly about how a space makes you feel; natural light, proportion, texture, privacy, and connection to greenery.”
Both villas are built across three levels, and the same instinct for division shows up again upstairs: the principal bedroom gets its own private lounge, a walk-in wardrobe, and generously appointed bathrooms.
“Good planning is about reducing friction, and we design with that in mind,” says Kimemia. “We look at the home as a place for restoration as much as it is for activity. People want a place that can support productivity and social life, but also somewhere they can retreat, disconnect and recharge.”
Staff quarters, laundry areas, and secure two-car parking are folded into both properties, out of sight of the main entertaining floors. The result is a home that feels both functional and at ease. Even the technology follows this logic: intelligent lighting, climate control, and security are integrated into the architecture to run quietly in the background.
At Enchanting Oaks, that same thinking extends beyond the villa’s walls. The pool, gym, and jogging paths sit inside the same gated perimeter as the homes themselves, so residents don’t need to leave the development to exercise and unwind. Whispering Oaks, the smaller and more private of the two, makes a different trade-off: fewer shared amenities, fewer neighbours, and more of its own grounds.
Kimemia concludes, “People are buying homes for how well they let them live. The best compliment a developer can get is a customer marvelling about never having to think about how well things work, and how well the house fits their lifestyle. That is what we design for.”
The Oaks Series reflects a broader understanding of what today’s Nairobi buyer is looking for: not only square footage, but also whether a house can adapt to the rhythms of an ordinary week, one that includes working from home, hosting people without much notice, and still having somewhere to close the door when the house is full.
Enchanting Oaks, already under construction in leafy Grevillea Grove, Westlands, starts at 5,229 sq ft with prices from USD 698,500. Whispering Oaks, in Spring Valley, is the smaller of the two, from 4,177 sq ft at USD 577,500, with completion projected within two years.
