Britam General Insurance has expanded its support for medical practitioners by offering enhanced benefits for nurses and clinical officers under its professional indemnity insurance.

Kenya has a large number of registered nurses and clinical officers, but professional indemnity insurance is not mandatory for them, unlike for doctors.

Eligible healthcare professionals for this enhanced cover include the over 60,000 registered nurses and 25,000 clinical officers who are active members of their respective national regulatory bodies or associations in Kenya.

The most common claims under professional indemnity include allegations of negligence or malpractice, defamation, breach of confidentiality, cost of disciplinary hearings and loss of documents.

The benefits of Britam’s Professional Indemnity cover for nurses and clinical officers, which has a free last expense benefit and Personal Accident cover embedded on it, are numerous. It provides comprehensive financial protection in the event of a claim or lawsuit alleging negligence or malpractice. This includes covering legal defense costs, such as attorney fees, court expenses, and potential settlements or damages awarded to the claimant.

“Nurses and clinical officers play a pivotal role in patient care. Their actions and decisions significantly impact patient well-being,” said Jackson Theuri, Britam General Insurance CEO and Principal Officer.

Adding: “Our professional indemnity cover is designed to protect these healthcare professionals, ensuring they can perform their duties with peace of mind, without the constant fear of legal repercussions.”

In addition to financial protection, Britam’s Professional Indemnity Insurance for nurses and clinical officers offers access to risk management resources and support. This includes guidance on best practices, safety protocols, and risk mitigation strategies, helping healthcare professionals enhance their practice, reduce errors, and promote patient safety.

The policy also helps protect the professional reputation of nurses and clinical officers by providing legal representation to defend against unfounded claims, thus preserving their standing in the healthcare community and maintaining trust with patients and colleagues.

Britam’s Professional Indemnity cover can also be extended to cover additional risks at an extra premium. These include breach of professional duty, defamation (libel and slander), loss of documents, and breach of confidentiality, where unintentional disclosure of client information results in financial losses.

Britam’s professional indemnity insurance starts at just Kshs 5,813 annually and includes a built-in Last Expense benefit, with an optional Domestic Home Package add-on.

Britam has established itself in this market, already serving doctors with its existing professional indemnity insurance.
