Democracy for the Citizens Party candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru has been declared the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency after securing a decisive victory in the closely watched by-election.

Official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission showed that Waweru garnered 35,440 votes, comfortably defeating United Democratic Alliance candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who received 5,450 votes.

IEBC Returning Officer Antony Njiraine declared Waweru duly elected on Friday, July 17, following the parliamentary by-election held on Thursday, July 16.

The DCP candidate defeated Nyagah by 29,990 votes, cementing a commanding win for the party in a contest that attracted nine candidates.

Speaking after he was declared the winner, Waweru thanked Ol Kalou residents for placing their confidence in him and pledged to serve the constituency diligently.

He described the result as a victory for the people and promised to focus on improving residents’ welfare and advancing development across the constituency.

Nyagah conceded defeat and congratulated Waweru, urging him to serve the people of Ol Kalou.

“Congratulations, Sammy Kamau Waweru. Go and serve the people,” Nyagah said following the announcement of the results.

The by-election was held following the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho in March 2026 while undergoing treatment at The Nairobi Hospital. Kiaraho had represented the constituency since 2013.

Beyond choosing a new MP, the contest was viewed as a major political test between President William Ruto’s UDA and the DCP associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Waweru’s overwhelming victory is therefore expected to trigger renewed debate about the political mood in Nyandarua County and the wider Mt Kenya region as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The election was, however, marked by reports of tension and isolated violence in parts of the constituency, including claims of attacks on residents and the use of teargas.

Following his declaration, Waweru is expected to receive his election certificate and take the oath of office before formally assuming his duties in the National Assembly.
