Nigerian‑British artist DEELA is Spotify’s EQUAL Africa artist of the month, spotlighted for her vibrant, unapologetic sound and rising influence across the African and global music landscapes. Her dynamic blend of rap, hip‑hop, and Afro‑infused rhythms has steadily built momentum through a series of standout releases that showcase her bold artistic identity.

In 2025, she closed out a defining year with the release of her album Wicked, a project that fused genre‑bending energy with rhythmic confidence. Tracks like Slide and Why Always Me? highlight her ability to craft music that moves both bodies and minds.

Born in Lagos and raised between the city’s rich musical heritage and the UK’s underground scenes, DEELA channels her diverse influences into a sound that feels both immediate and layered. Early works such as FIT, Anyways and Watchu Mean demonstrated her lyrical versatility and fearless voice, making her presence felt long before her latest project debuted.

DEELA’s music moves with playful confidence and kinetic energy; qualities she attributes to the joy she finds in creation and the self-assurance she brings to her craft. She speaks openly about the importance of taking up space and maintaining a positive, assertive mindset in the industry, these themes come through vividly in her lyrics and public persona.

Spotify’s EQUAL Africa programme continues to spotlight women redefining the continent’s music narrative, and DEELA’s selection underscores her growing influence. Through her releases and performances, she embodies how contemporary African artists are reshaping sound and culture on their own terms.

“DEELA’s music reflects the creativity and drive shaping Africa’s current music scene,” says Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub‑Saharan Africa. “As part of Spotify’s EQUAL programme, she represents how African women are advancing visibility, driving opportunities, and building global connections through their art.”

We caught up with DEELA to explore her creative journey, her inspirations, and the bold energy in her music.

What’s one surprising thing fans might not know about you?

  • I love RuPaul’s Drag Race!

When did you realise music was your destiny?

  • It was when I realised that I have this unshakable joy while I’m creating music and get into a flow state very easily. I love that people associate my music with confidence and fierceness because that’s exactly why I do it.

Which African artists shaped your sound growing up?

  • Wande Coal, Lagbaja, 9ice, Asa, Wizkid, P-Square… just to name a few.

How would you describe your sound to a first-time listener?

  • Exciting, cheeky, and lively.

Any advice for someone afraid to follow their dreams?

  • Stay consistent – good things come to those who wait.

How do you navigate the industry as a woman?

  • I always put myself out there. The best people you meet are outside, and it’s important to always talk positively about yourself in these rooms. It feels daunting taking up space, but that’s the best way to navigate the music industry as a woman. You can hear this attitude in my lyrics; I’m a firm believer in manifesting, thinking positively, and saying a big “no” to BS.

What does being part of EQUAL mean to you?

  • Being unapologetic and taking up space. It’s an honour to be selected amongst such an all-star alumni.
