The I&M Foundation, the philanthropic arm of I&M Bank, has reaffirmed its commitment to the Imarisha Ngong’ Road Forest Project, a KES 162 million initiative launched in May 2024 in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). This clarification comes in response to public speculation regarding the project’s scope and intent.
In an official statement issued on 19 May 2025, the Foundation emphasized that the project is a non-commercial, community-centered environmental initiative aimed at restoring degraded forest land, conserving biodiversity, and creating inclusive green spaces to support public wellbeing and climate resilience. The project includes the construction of ablution blocks, ranger housing, fencing of 14.2 kilometers of the sanctuary forest block, nursery establishment, regeneration of degraded areas, opening of additional trails, borehole drilling, water reticulation, and installation of water points to sustain the nursery and park.
The Foundation categorically stated that it is not aware of, nor associated with, any alleged hospitality development at the center of discussions on social media and media outlets. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility and will continue working with stakeholders to ensure the project delivers lasting conservation value for both people and the planet.
Since its inception, the project has achieved significant milestones, including the creation of 682 jobs in its initial phase, restoration of 3 hectares of degraded forest, drilling of a borehole, installation of 5 kilometers of electrified fencing, and development of 35 kilometers of nature trails. The initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader environmental goals, including the national plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.
KFS Chief Conservator of Forests, Alex Lemarkoko, highlighted the broader benefits of the project, noting that revitalizing this urban woodland eases pressure on Karura Forest, which receives over 70,000 visitors monthly, and provides Nairobi residents with an expanded green space for recreational and educational purposes.
As the project progresses, the I&M Foundation remains committed to environmental conservation and community engagement, working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure the initiative delivers lasting conservation benefits.
