Kenya Airways Cargo (KQ Cargo) has expanded its route network to include direct cargo flights between Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Mogadishu in Somalia. The new route will have weekly flights starting from February 9th, 2024, and is expected to increase to two flights per week in April 2024. KQ Cargo has partnered with GSA Global Cargo LLC, a global cargo sales and service agent based in the UAE, to handle logistics for the route.
Recently, KQ Cargo increased its freight capacities with the introduction of a B737-800F aircraft, which offers extended range capabilities. This allows the airline to connect vital cargo hubs and explore new opportunities to meet customer demands and adapt to market changes.
According to KQ Cargo Director Dick Murianki, this new route aligns with the airline’s mission to promote Africa’s prosperity by enhancing connectivity between its people, cultures, and markets. Murianki emphasized that KQ Cargo aims to be Africa’s preferred cargo carrier, offering unique network options for customers.
Mr. Murianki also highlighted the significant demand for air freight transportation between the UAE and Somalia, particularly for high-tech consumer goods, automotive parts, project cargo, and clothing. He expressed confidence in Kenya Airways’ expertise in the region and the suitability of the B737-800F aircraft for meeting long-term cargo needs.
CEO of GSA Global Cargo LLC, Mr. Kannan Nachiappan, emphasized the benefits of the direct connection between the UAE and Somalia for customers, including increased capacity, shorter transit times, and reduced costs. He noted that the UAE serves as a crucial logistics hub for Africa and having a dedicated KQ Cargo freighter improves access to remote destinations across the region.
Additionally, Kenya Airways will resume direct passenger flights between Nairobi and Mogadishu starting from February 15th, 2024.
