Trump’s Second Term: A Rare Opportunity for Real African Energy Independence (By NJ Ayuk)

The United States has formally withdrawn from 66 international organisations, including 35 non United Nations bodies and 31 entities within the UN system, marking one of the most extensive rollbacks of multilateral engagement in modern American history.

The decision, announced through an executive directive, reflects a broader foreign policy shift that prioritises national sovereignty, reduced financial commitments to international institutions, and a reassessment of bodies viewed as misaligned with United States strategic and economic interests.

According to official documentation, all federal agencies have been instructed to cease participation, funding, and cooperation with the affected organisations.

Global Reaction and Implications

Supporters of the move argue it will significantly reduce United States financial exposure to international institutions and allow Washington to engage selectively on bilateral and regional terms. Officials have framed the withdrawal as a corrective measure against duplication, inefficiency, and politicisation within global governance structures.

Critics, however, warn that the decision risks weakening international cooperation on climate change, humanitarian protection, trade coordination, and conflict prevention. Diplomats and analysts have also cautioned that reduced United States participation could accelerate the rise of alternative leadership by rival powers within global institutions.

The long term impact of the withdrawals is expected to unfold over the coming months as funding mechanisms unwind and governance roles are reassigned across the affected organisations.
