NBK Records 61% Growth in Profit After Tax in H1 2026 as Transformation Gains Momentum

National Bank of Kenya (NBK), a wholly owned subsidiary of Access Bank PLC, has delivered a strong financial performance for the six months ended 30 June 2026, recording significant growth in profitability, continued balance sheet expansion and improved asset quality.

Profit After Tax rose to KShs 1.72 billion, up from KShs 1.07 billion recorded in the same period in 2025, representing a 61% increase.

The performance was driven by stronger net interest income, a significant reduction in credit impairment charges and disciplined cost management, reflecting the continued progress of the Bank’s transformation journey.

“The bank has started 2026 on a strong footing, with our first-half performance reflecting the resilience of the business, growing customer confidence and the positive impact of the strategic initiatives we have implemented across the bank. We remain focused on building on this momentum, strengthening our business and delivering sustainable value to our customers and stakeholders, “said John Ojalla, Ag. Managing Director, National Bank of Kenya.

Financial Performance

NBK Recorded strong improvements across key financial indicators during the first half of the year.

Net Interest Income increased by 11% to Kshs 5.40 billion, up from 4.87 billion in H1 2025, supported by disciplined asset pricing and improved funding efficiency.

Non-Interest Income remained resilient at KShs 1.47 billion, reflecting consistent performance in fees and commissions despite a competitive operating environment. 

Operating Expenses at KShs 4.61 billion, supported by ongoing cost management and operational efficiency initiatives. 

Loan Loss Provisions: Declined significantly to KShs 80.9 million from KShs 1 billion in the prior year, driven by improved recoveries and enhanced credit quality.

Balance Sheet Performance 

The bank continued to strengthen its balance sheet during the period, supported by sustained customer confidence and growth across key areas of the business.

Total Assets increased to KShs 157 billion from KShs 141 billion in December 2025. 

Customer Deposits closed at KShs 116.3 billion compared to KShs 106.1 billion in December 2025, reflecting continued customer confidence and providing a stable funding base for growth. 

Net Loans and Advances increased to KShs 61 billion from KShs 51 billion in December 2025, reflecting continued support for customers and businesses across key sectors. 

“Our H1 performance demonstrates the progress we are making in strengthening the Bank and positioning it for sustainable growth. We remain committed to enhancing customer experience, strengthening our digital capabilities, maintaining disciplined risk management and improved operational efficiency as we continue to build a stronger NBK.” added John Ojalla.

Continued Transformation

The H1 2026 performance reflects the continued progress of NBK’s transformation journey and the positive momentum being across the business.

The bank continues to focus on improving operational efficiency, enhancing asset quality, strengthening customer relationships and leveraging opportunities arising from its integration with Access Bank PLC.

These efforts are contributing to a more resilient business and strengthening NBK’s Capacity to support customers, businesses and the broader economy.

Outlook for 2026

Looking ahead, NBK remains optimistic about its growth trajectory and the opportunities ahead.

The Bank will continue to strengthen its digital capabilities, enhance customer experience, maintain discipline risk management and drive operational efficiencies across the business.

As integration with Access Bank continues, NBK remains committed to supporting businesses, households and the broader economy while delivering sustainable value to its customers and stakeholders.

With continued focus and execution, the Bank is well positioned to build on the momentum achieved in the first half of the year and further strengthens its market position.
