Speaking at the lavish wedding of Moses Budamba Mudavadi and Qillian Ndeso Saiya on Saturday, 29 November 2025, William Ruto implored young Kenyans — especially men — to settle down and form families, rather than persist in a lifestyle of casual relationships and nightlife.

Addressing guests at the ceremony held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang’ata, Nairobi, Ruto declared that “the foundation of a nation is the firm foundation of a family.” He singled out men over 25 and told them: “Wacha kuzunguka hapa, unatoka kwa club hii, inaingia kwa club hiyo” — stop hopping from club to club.

Ruto went on to say: “If you are a man, be man enough to marry the woman you love. Too many people run away from responsibility, claiming they like being single.”He emphasised that taking on familial responsibility is not about following trends, but about courage and commitment.

The message resonated with some public figures. Geoffrey Mosiria, the Nairobi County Chief Officer, supported the call, noting that many young people face economic barriers — such as financial instability — that make marriage difficult. He urged the government to consider introducing a “starter-life kit” under the Ministry of Youth to help those aged 25 and above start married life.

At the same time, the call has sparked a national conversation about the socioeconomic challenges facing youth — from employment struggles and the rising cost of living to shifting social norms. Some critics argue that urging early marriage without addressing underlying economic realities may not be practical for many young Kenyans.

As many react to Ruto’s remarks, the debate continues on whether early marriage offers stability and responsibility — as the president suggests — or whether it overlooks the structural issues confronting youth today.
