As the festive season kicks in, Kenyans are being urged to stay vigilant and prioritize safety during a time traditionally associated with increased security risks.

BM Security today marked its 40th anniversary with a celebration attended by key stakeholders, industry partners and clients, and also saw the release of BM Security’s Annual Security Report and Forecast for 2024-2025, which provides an in-depth overview of Kenya’s evolving security landscape, with insights into emerging trends, challenges, and the growing role of technology in protecting lives and assets.

According to the annual security report, incidents of burglary, road accidents, among others, typically spike in December, driven by travel, festive activities, and heightened spending.

Speaking at the event in Nairobi, Michelle Morgan, CEO of BM Security, emphasized the importance of preparation. “The festive period is a time of celebration, but it also comes with unique security challenges. We advise individuals and businesses to conduct thorough safety checks, remain vigilant, and adopt preventive measures to ensure a safe and joyous season.”

BM Security advises homeowners to secure their premises, avoid announcing travel plans on social media, and engage reliable security services. Standalone homes, in affluent neighborhoods like Kilimani and Westlands, are most at risk, with thieves targeting high-value items, such as electronics and cash.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), as highlighted in the annual report, road accidents pose a significant risk during the holidays, claiming 7,114 lives between January and August 2024. Alcohol consumption, speeding, and fatigue are primary contributors.

“Enhanced road safety measures can save lives during this busy period. Our team is ready to support clients with emergency response services to mitigate risks,” Morgan assured. BM Security recommends defensive driving courses, route planning, and avoiding isolated roads during late hours.

The Annual Security Report highlights how technology is playing an increasingly pivotal role in safeguarding people and property in Kenya. As Kenyans prepare for the holidays, BM Security is doubling its efforts to provide 24/7 emergency response and security updates. Some of their pioneering innovative solutions include;

  • BM Smart Panics: A mobile app offering real-time access to critical security features, including camera monitoring, alarm checks, and emergency alerts, ensuring peace of mind whenever needed.
  • BM Purple Code: A secure communication platform designed for women to report gender-based violence swiftly, connecting users to immediate support services.
  • BM Vigicontrol: An advanced guard tour system that enhances supervision through GPS tracking, SOS alerts, and real-time incident reporting with multimedia support.
  • BM Visitor Management: Streamlines access control by providing guests with QR code invitations that are verified by on-duty staff before entry.

Beyond festive-specific risks, the report paints a sober picture of Kenya’s security landscape with the outlook for 2025 suggesting continued challenges. Political unrest is expected to persist, with public demonstrations likely tied to economic grievances. Crime rates may also remain high if economic conditions stagnate, with opportunistic and organized criminal activity predicted to increase.
