SOFY UNICHARM EAST AFRICA LIMITED has officially launched in Kenya, marking a new chapter in the company’s commitment to improving access to quality and affordable personal hygiene products, empowering women across East Africa.
The joint venture between Unicharm Corporation, Toyota Tsusho Corporation and CFAO Kenya Limitedcombines Unicharm’s global expertise in personal hygiene and innovation with strong local market knowledge and capabilities. The new company will integrate product development, production, sales and marketing in Kenya, with plans to expand the supply and export of sanitary products to neighboring East African markets. Representing an investment of Ksh 2 billion, the joint venture underscores the partners’ commitment to driving regional growth, strengthening local manufacturing capabilities and contributing to the economic development of East Africa.
“SOFY UNICHARM EAST AFRICA is the first Unicharm local subsidiary to proudly feature “SOFY” in its corporate name. To us, SOFY is far more than just a product brand. By elevating SOFY into our company name, we are declaring our strong commitment to standing beside women in East Africa, understanding their needs, supporting their possibilities, and growing together with them. This also marks the beginning of a long-term journey. Starting with women as our focal point, we aim to evolve into a company that supports lifetime value in East Africa in the future. We look forward to applying the knowledge and technologies Unicharm has cultivated globally—including baby care such as baby diapers—tailored to the needs of this region.” said Mr. Takahisa Takahara, President and CEO of Unicharm Corporation.
“SOFY UNICHARM EAST AFRICA was established with a clear commitment to improving quality of life across East Africa by addressing hygiene challenges and supporting the health and dignity of women,” said Daigo Fujiwara, Managing Director of SOFY UNICHARM EAST AFRICA LIMITED. “By providing reliable feminine care solutions, promoting better hygiene habits and addressing period poverty, we aim to empower women to live with greater confidence and participate fully in society. Together with our partners and local communities, we will continue to innovate and contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable future for the region.”
The SOFY brand entered the Kenyan market in 2023 with the premium SOFY Deep Absorb product. In January 2025, the company introduced locally produced SOFY Long Lasting, an affordable option designed to respond to the needs and purchasing realities of Kenyan consumers. The company has also introduced single-pad sachets based on consumer feedback that the cost of sanitary products can be a barrier to access. This aligns with SOFY UNICHARM EAST AFRICA LIMITED’s commitment to end period poverty and improve access to quality personal hygiene products. To achieve this, the company’s approach is built around co-creation, where they work with consumers, communities, NGOs and Government institutions to develop solutions that respond to local needs.
As part of the SOFY brand’s empowerment drive, the company has invested heavily in menstrual health education in schools and communities. The SOFY brand has partnered with various organizations including JICA, UNFPA, and UN Women Kenya on menstrual hygiene awareness and educational initiatives. These efforts seek to improve knowledge, encourage open conversations around menstruation and help break down the stigma and taboos that can prevent girls and women from accessing information and support. The company’s efforts also align with Kenya’s broader initiatives to improve menstrual hygiene management, as approximately 54% of girls in Kenya have experienced challenges accessing sanitary products. This underscores the continued need for affordable menstrual products, education, and supportive environments.
Sustainability will be an integral part of SOFY UNICHARM EAST AFRICA LIMITED’s growth strategy, building on Unicharm’s broader commitment to creating social, environmental, and business value. The company will promote sustainable development through local production, supporting Kenya’s manufacturing ecosystem, provide affordable and accessible menstrual-health solutions, while exploring responsible approaches to product use, waste management, and resource circulation.
The launch marks the beginning of a shared journey between Japanese innovation and Kenyan expertise.Guided by Unicharm’s corporate brand essence, “Love Your Possibilities,” Sofy Unicharm East Africa is dedicated to realizing a society where women and girls can live authentically, without their potential being restricted by menstruation. By providing quality products, strengthening local production, and driving menstrual health education, the company seeks to build a sustainable business while contributing to Unicharm’s ultimate Purpose: the realization of the SDGs.
