More than 100 mechanics from across the North Rift gathered in Eldoret today as Vivo Energy Kenya celebrated the skilled professionals who keep Kenya’s transport, agriculture and businesses moving. Held under the theme Celebrating the People Behind Kenya’s Mobility Ecosystem, the 2nd annual Mechanics Wellness Day recognised the critical role mechanics play in powering the country’s economy while reaffirming Shell Lubricants’ long-term commitment to their wellbeing and professional growth.

The event recognised mechanics for their pivotal contributions in driving Kenya’s economy by keeping the country’s transport, industrial, manufacturing, agricultural, engineering and construction sectors running efficiently. Whether servicing tractors preparing farmland, trucks transporting fresh produce, buses connecting communities or family vehicles travelling across the country, mechanics are essential to Kenya’s mobility ecosystem. Their expertise keeps people moving, businesses operating and agricultural value chains functioning every day.

Every day, they support vehicle and equipment maintenance, repairs, and quality assurance, ensuring goods and people reach markets safely, which underscores their indispensable contribution to the nation’s economic growth.

The Mechanics Wellness Day forms part of Vivo Energy Kenya’s ongoing commitment to supporting mechanics beyond lubricants by investing in their health, professional development and long-term success. The initiative is guided by its vision of realising the full potential of its people and business partners while setting the benchmark for quality, safety and responsibility in Africa’s downstream energy sector. The Oil Marketing Company continues to invest in programmes that offer a diversified value for the mechanics beyond the workshop.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, Stephen Gikonyo, Lubricants & LPG Sales and Marketing Manager at Vivo Energy Kenya, said the event was a tribute to the mechanics whose expertise keeps the country moving.

“This day is about celebrating and thanking the skilled men and women whose hands keep Kenya moving. Behind every safe journey, every successful delivery and every successful harvest is a mechanic whose expertise makes it possible.

Through Shell Lubricants, we are proud to stand alongside these professionals by investing not only in high quality products, but also in their health, skills and wellbeing. We believe that behind every mechanic should be a partner that cares, and today’s event is a reflection of that commitment.”

Through Shell Lubricants, Vivo Energy Kenya continues to support mechanics through technical training, product knowledge programmes, safety education and access to world-class lubrication solutions, helping workshops deliver better service and build customer confidence.

As trusted advisors to motorists, their trade helps vehicle owners make informed maintenance decisions, improve engine performance, increase vehicle life and mitigate operating costs by the use of high-quality lubricants.

More than 100 mechanics from Eldoret participated in the wellness event, which combined health, sports and recreation in recognition of the critical role mechanics play in keeping Kenya moving. Activities included football matches, pool and darts competitions, indoor games, and comprehensive health screening.

Speaking during the event, Ezra Omwancha of Equity Afya highlighted the unique occupational hazards mechanics face and emphasised the importance of regular health and wellness checks.

“Mechanics often work long hours in confined spaces, lift heavy equipment, and are regularly exposed to physically demanding conditions. Through this initiative, we are providing free health screening and related medical services to help ensure they remain healthy and able to continue supporting Kenya’s transport and agricultural sectors,” he said.

The event also provided an opportunity for mechanics to connect with colleagues, their families and industry partners in a relaxed setting, reinforcing a sense of community within the profession.

The celebrations culminated in an awards ceremony where winners of the various sporting and recreational competitions were recognised, bringing the day’s activities to a fitting close.

As Kenya’s mobility ecosystem continues to evolve, Vivo Energy Kenya remains committed to strengthening partnerships with the professionals who keep it running. Through initiatives such as Mechanics Wellness Day, the company continues to champion the wellbeing, recognition and professional growth of mechanics, reaffirming that investing in the people behind Kenya’s mobility is an investment in the country’s economic future.
