Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga dominated Kenya’s search story in 2025, leading the trending Kenyan public figures list and surfacing prominently second in news-related searches. His influence was so pronounced that Kenyans also searched widely for “enigma meaning,” a term that has long been associated with his political persona. The year also saw continued searches around the Social Health Authority (SHA), as the public sought to understand the new healthcare system and its implications.

Sports fever: CHAN and Faith Kipyegon lead the charge

Sports remained a powerful unifying force, with CHAN, the African Nations Championship, becoming Kenya’s top-searched news item in 2025. The tournament’s rise to the top spot underscores the nation’s deep love for football and the energy it brings into public conversation. Runner Faith Kipyegon, emerged as the most searched sports figure, her continued excellence affirming her position as one of Kenya’s most celebrated athletes. At the same time, Kenyans closely followed global football, driving increased searches for stars such as Slovenian player Benjamin Šeško and Portuguese playerDiogo Jota who passed away in 2025..

A nation seeking meaning and understanding

Kenyans spent much of 2025 turning to Google to decode the world. Global religious events prompted a surge in searches for the meaning of words such as conclave, habemus and papam.  Questions included “Who is the new pope?” while the question “Who is Charlie Kirk?” signalled growing interest in international political figures. Locally, Kenyans looked up the meaning of terms like jowi, kubant, saba saba, demure, and wantam, reflecting cultural shifts and conversations happening both online and offline. Meanwhile, questions such as “What is happening in Sudan?” and “What is happening in Congo?” illustrated widespread interest in understanding geopolitical shifts shaping the global context.

Food, wellness and Kenya’s search for comfort

The nation’s kitchens were active this year, with “ginger shots recipe” leading all culinary searches as Kenyans embraced wellness and home remedies. Comfort foods and creative cooking also trended strongly, driving interest in chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls, dawa, mini pizzas, and even the Italian classic osso buco. These searches highlight the balance between health-conscious habits and indulgent home cooking that defined the year.

Kenya’s soundtrack: nostalgia meets new anthems

Music searches painted a picture of Kenya’s diverse soundscape. The most searched lyrics of the year were for “Jamaica Farewell,” a nostalgic Harry Belafonte classic that resonated widely in 2025. This was followed by contemporary hits such as Kendrick Lamar’s“Not Like Us,” showing the country’s fluid blend of old and new musical influences. Regional tracks like Mbosso’s Pawa, Donjo Maber, Iyanii’s collabo with Dufla Diligon, Toxic Lyrikali’s Backbencher and the 1970s hit, Kasongo also featured prominently. These patterns were mirrored in the year’s top songs, including Jamaica Farewell, Taya by Okello Max, and Bien’s All My Enemies Are Suffering, which shaped the soundtrack of 2025.
