Canon Central and North Africa hosted its inaugural Canon Creator Lens event on 19 November 2025 at Shamba Café in Nairobi. The gathering brought together content creators from across East Africa for a day of learning, experimentation and collaboration aimed at raising the standard of regional visual storytelling.
The event followed an open call to emerging and established creators and offered an immersive programme that included panel discussions, inspirational talks, hands on product sessions and live demonstrations. It attracted participants working across fashion, lifestyle, weddings, wildlife, podcasting and other creative disciplines.
Creator Lens was built around the principles of Learn, Explore, Network and Synergy, ensuring that attendees gained new skills from industry specialists, discovered Canon’s latest tools, connected with peers and developed professional relationships that strengthen creative output.
The event formed part of Canon’s wider Innovation and Customer Experience strategy, which focuses on deepening engagement with creators and supporting the continued growth of video and digital production across Africa. Global industry research continues to show that video consumption remains on an upward trajectory, with both short form and long form digital viewing increasing annually.
A major highlight of the Nairobi edition was four immersive experience zones, each led by a respected figure in the region’s creative industry. In the Podcast Zone, broadcaster Dr Ofweneke showcased solutions suitable for podcasters at any stage, including the EOS C80, R5 Mark II, C50 and EOS R50V, together with the Live Switcher application. The Fashion and Lifestyle Zone, led by content creator Joy Kendi, demonstrated compact video tools such as the PowerShot V10 and EOS R50V, alongside accessories designed for vertical content and live streaming. Wedding videographer Gabriel Kasha hosted the Wedding Zone, where attendees explored cinema solutions including the C50 and R5 Mark II with a focus on 4K Dual Base ISO and Log colour grading. In the Cinematic Zone, wildlife filmmaker Hans Ngoteya introduced participants to Canon cinema cameras including the EOS C50, C80 and C400, paired with Canon cinema lenses.
Attendees also took part in keynote sessions, panel discussions and live shooting environments. A content creation competition ran throughout the event, where participants shot and edited their own video projects using Canon equipment. Entries were assessed on technical execution and creativity, with winners receiving Canon prizes and mentorship opportunities.
“Through Creator Lens, we aim to nurture and empower a vibrant community of storytellers who are redefining content creation across Africa. This initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to innovation, collaboration, and enhancing the customer experience through creativity,” said Rashad Ghani, B2C Business Unit Director at Canon Central and North Africa. He added that Canon is committed to providing creators with tools and skills that support powerful visual narratives across both photography and video.
Following the successful Nairobi event, Canon plans to expand Creator Lens to other markets including Morocco and Nigeria, building a sustainable ecosystem of macro, micro and nano creators. The initiative is also intended to encourage more African creators to advance their production capabilities, moving from mobile devices to Canon’s range of entry level and professional video cameras.
