The companies said the card targets customers who support families remotely, manage shared household budgets or are seeking an alternative to cash and multiple payment methods.

Unlike a normal debit or credit card, customers can load a specific amount onto the prepaid card, effectively limiting spending to the available balance.

The card can be reloaded through the Mastercard Gateway using a bank card issued in any country, making it possible for Kenyans living abroad to send grocery money directly to relatives back home.

According to the partners, the arrangement will help families ensure money sent for food and other household necessities remains available for its intended purpose.

“Helping our customers shop smarter means giving them simple, predictable tools for everyday essentials,” Majid Al Futtaim Retail Regional Director for East Africa Christophe Orcet stated.

“The Carrefour Prepaid Card allows customers to plan grocery spending, stay in control and manage household budgets with confidence, while retaining the ease of card payments.”

KCB Bank Kenya Director of Retail Banking Jane Isiaho noted that the new payment solution would reduce customers’ dependence on cash while improving day-to-day spending management.

She added that the card would be supported by round-the-clock customer service and accepted at all Carrefour outlets in Kenya.

Mastercard Senior Vice President and Country Manager for East Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands Shehryar Ali said the product combined convenience, spending control and the security associated with digital payments.

Customers can register for the card at Carrefour stores through staff-assisted activations or through the available digital channels. Introductory incentives will include cashback and reward points.
