Five distinguished researchers from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. have been selected as 2025 Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), one of the world’s most prestigious engineering organizations. The title of IEEE Fellow is awarded annually to the top 0.1% of IEEE members who have made outstanding contributions to technology and societal advancement. This year’s honorees represent Samsung’s global expertise across diverse fields, from telecommunications and AI to machine learning, camera technology, and foundry innovation. The recipients are:
- Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, President, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the Device eXperience (DX) Division, and Head of Samsung Research
- Younsun Kim, Master at Samsung Research
- Timothy Hospedales, Head of Samsung Research’s Europe AI Center
- Michael Scott Brown, Head of Samsung Research’s AI Center in Toronto
- Yuri Masuoka, Fellow and Head of the SRAM Lab in the Foundry Business of the Device Solutions (DS) Division
The IEEE Fellow title is the highest membership grade and is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to their fields. Selection is based on a rigorous evaluation process that considers achievements in research, development, industry contributions, and expert knowledge. Recipients must have at least ten years of experience in their respective areas.
Leadership in 5G and Standardization
Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun’s recognition as an IEEE Fellow comes in honor of his leadership in the development of 5G and virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) technologies. Having joined Samsung Electronics in 2012, Cheun has been instrumental in the commercialization of 5G mobile communications, achieving a significant milestone with the launch of the world’s first 5G mobile technology. His expertise in telecommunications has propelled Samsung to the forefront of global network business, and his ongoing efforts focus on advancing core technologies that will shape the future of communication.
In his statement, Cheun expressed his pride: “Being appointed as an IEEE Fellow is an honor. Samsung Electronics will continue to dedicate itself to innovative research and development that leads the future, driving technological advancements that enrich people’s daily lives.”
Younsun Kim, also honored as an IEEE Fellow, is recognized for his significant contributions to the physical layer standardization of 5G. As a former vice chair and current chair of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Radio Access Network Working Group 1 (RAN WG1), Kim has played a pivotal role in the development of global 5G standards and is now preparing for the upcoming standardization of 6G RAN, set to launch next year.
Machine Learning and AI Expertise
Timothy Hospedales, who joined Samsung Electronics in 2019, earned his IEEE Fellow recognition for his groundbreaking work in data-efficient machine learning and meta-learning. As head of Samsung Research’s AI Center in Cambridge, U.K., Hospedales oversees a wide range of AI research and development projects. His work focuses on creating algorithms that enable machines to learn more efficiently from data, contributing to advancements in AI applications across various industries.
Similarly, Michael Scott Brown’s work in in-camera color image processing has earned him an IEEE Fellow distinction. Brown, who joined Samsung in 2019, is a leader in computer vision and now leads the AI Center’s efforts in Toronto. His contributions to image processing technology have significantly improved camera performance, enhancing visual experiences across Samsung’s product lineup.
Innovations in Foundry Technology
Yuri Masuoka’s selection as an IEEE Fellow honors her pioneering contributions to the development of advanced foundry transistors. As head of the SRAM Lab in the Foundry Business of Samsung’s Device Solutions Division, Masuoka has led efforts that have driven innovations in semiconductor technology, which are key to the advancement of next-generation devices.
A Legacy of Excellence at Samsung
Samsung Electronics continues to build on its legacy of innovation, with previous IEEE Fellows including Executive Vice President Sunghyun Choi of the Network Business, Fellow Juho Lee of Samsung Research, and Senior Vice President Charlie Zhang of Samsung Research.
