In his famous open letter written on April 16, 1963, while incarcerated in the Birmingham City Jail, Martin Luther King Jr., the figurehead of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, asserts, “Conversely, everyone has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” This quote encapsulates the concept of “civil disobedience,” advocating for protest strategies such as sit-ins at segregated lunch counters. King proclaims that it is just for activists to frequently disobey laws, especially when those laws are unjust; disobedience becomes a moral imperative.

On June 18, 2024, thousands of young Kenyans flooded Nairobi’s Central Business District to protest against the proposed Kenyan Finance Bill 2024. This movement, fronted by #RejectFinanceBill2024, has gained momentum on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X.

The Kenyan Finance Bill 2024 is a legislative proposal presented to the Kenya National Assembly, seeking to amend various tax laws. It proposes amendments that will impact a wide range of tax brackets, including income tax, VAT, and other financial services. The Bill also grants the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) access to the confidential information of Kenyan citizens.

The #RejectFinanceBill2024 campaign gains traction as Kenyans realise the implications of certain provisions within the Bill. Gen Z, in particular, leads the charge, demonstrating a rising political consciousness. Today, we witness a tour de force of a generation ready to put everything on the line.

The hashtags #OccupyParliament and #RejectFinanceBill2024 reverberate through online platforms, signalling a new era of activism.
