The Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has assured the Ghanaians who were evacuated from South Africa due to xenophobic attacks in that country that, Government would continue to provide the needed support required to ensure their reintegration.
He stated this on Friday, 4th September, 2026 when he welcomed the final batch forty-one (41) evacuees on arrival at the Accra International Airport, accompanied by Ambassadors and Directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as officials from other government institutions. The Government of Ghana concluded the evacuation exercise with the arrival of the final batch of 41, bringing the number to nearly 1,900 Ghanaians evacuated since May, 2026.
Each of the 1,900 Ghanaians were provided them reintegration financial support, transportation allowance, medical care, psychosocial support, free health insurance registration and ongoing employment assistance.
The Minister stated that, in addition to the welcome packages prepared for them, their details would be included in a comprehensive database to enable them access appropriate social support systems, skills development, and scholarship opportunities, among other interventions, to enable them to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to national development.
He encouraged the returnees to remain hopeful and take advantage of the opportunities available in Ghana. He assured them of Government’s commitment to work assiduously to improve the economic condition of the country to create more opportunities for every Ghanaian citizen.
