Kenyans are increasingly using Google Search and AI tools to build advanced technical skills, marking a shift from passive online learning to more deliberate, skills-based digital education.

New Google Search trend data for March 2026 shows strong growth in searches linked to AI, automation, education and technical literacy. Interest in “AI Agent” searches rose by 16,720% over the past year, while searches for “AI Literacy” increased by 1,010%. Searches related to prompting tools also grew by 1,230%, suggesting that more Kenyans are learning how to use AI systems more effectively.

The data points to a broader change in how people are approaching technology. Rather than using search only for simple answers, Kenyans are increasingly looking for ways to build, automate and apply AI skills in professional and academic settings. Google said the trend reflects the country’s continued position as a regional technology leader, often referred to as the “Silicon Savannah.”

Education is one of the strongest areas of growth. Searches for AI-powered studying increased by 240% month-on-month, while “AI Tutor” emerged as a breakout trend. Interest in “AI and Chemistry” grew by 150%, and searches for “AI and School” rose by 200%. Online school searches also increased by 250%, pointing to growing demand for digital-first learning support.

Google said these trends are being supported by Kenya’s expanding digital infrastructure. Projects such as the Equiano subsea cable, which provides significantly more network capacity than previous systems, and the Umoja subsea cable are expected to improve internet speeds and access across the country. The company also cited research indicating that every dollar invested in digital technology in Kenya unlocks five dollars in economic value.

“Kenya is leading the way in the transition to an agentic era where technology acts as a 24/7 tutor and professional assistant,” said Nanjala Misiko, Group Product Marketing Manager for Consumer Apps, Sub-Saharan Africa at Google. “The incredible growth in technical literacy and automated tools shows a nation that is actively shaping its future through intentional learning.”

The March 2026 search trends suggest that AI is becoming a practical tool for learning, work and economic participation in Kenya. As digital skills become more central to future jobs, Google said it remains committed to providing technology that helps more people access learning opportunities and participate in the country’s growing digital economy.
