The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has reported a sharp rise in electricity consumption across all customer segments in the 2024/2025 financial year, with peak demand reaching a record 2,316.2 MW. This represents a 6.38 percent increase from the previous year’s 2,177 MW, signalling sustained economic growth.
Domestic electricity consumption registered the highest growth, rising 13.03 percent to 3,640.32 GWh. Small commercial users recorded an 11.5 percent increase to 1,913.26 GWh, while street lighting demand surged 43.89 percent. Consumption in electric mobility rose by 300 percent to 5.04 GWh.
EPRA Director General, Mr Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, welcomed the trend, noting that large-scale consumers saved Ksh 1.438 billion through the Time-of-Use tariff, while e-mobility continued to expand. He added, “We aim to improve this further by removing the 15,000-unit monthly consumption cap for e-mobility users.”
The report highlighted enhanced regional electricity interconnections, with imports from Ethiopia accounting for 83.09 percent of the 1,533.85 GWh imported, while Uganda and Tanzania contributed 14.71 percent and 2.2 percent respectively.
Kenya’s clean energy push also gained ground, with renewable sources making up 80.48 percent of total generation. Geothermal remained dominant at 39.51 percent, followed by hydro at 24.21 percent, wind at 13.18 percent, and solar at 3.27 percent. As of July 2025, more than 10 million Kenyans had been connected to the national grid.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption grew 15 percent to 414,861 metric tonnes, boosted by government programmes in schools and mass housing projects. EPRA also licensed 18 new autogas stations to add to the 16 already operational.
In the petroleum sector, domestic demand increased by 6.94 percent to 5.83 million cubic metres, supported by lower prices that spurred economic activity. The report further confirmed the restructuring of Kenya’s petroleum blocks into 50 units to attract investment, as the country advances plans for commercial oil production following discoveries in Turkana County.
