Kenya Airways (KQ) and China Eastern Airlines (MU) have renewed their codeshare agreement, reaffirming their commitment to enhance seamless travel between Africa and China. The partnership will allow passengers from both airlines to enjoy convenient access to a wider range of destinations across the two continents.

The renewed agreement opens up a world of new opportunities for Kenya Airways’ passengers to explore key domestic China destinations, including Shanghai, Kunming, Hangzhou, and Nanjing, all operated by China Eastern Airlines. Likewise, China Eastern Airlines’ customers now gain seamless connections through Nairobi to African cities such as Dar es Salaam, Accra, Lagos, Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Maputo, and Mauritius, inviting them to embark on exciting new journeys.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to providing connectivity into China and seamless travel for our customers. As we strengthen ties with China Eastern Airlines, we are also contributing to the growing economic and cultural collaboration between Africa and China,” said Martin Gitonga, Kenya Airways Head of Network Planning and Alliances.

At a crucial juncture in Africa-China relations, this codeshare agreement takes on added significance. The deepening ties, driven by robust trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges under initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) or the ‘New Silk Road,’ underscore the strategic importance of this partnership. As Africa’s leading trade partner, China’s role in facilitating infrastructure development, investment, and capacity building across the continent is further enhanced by this agreement. The improved air connectivity will catalyse these efforts, making it easier for business travellers, investors, and tourists to bridge the gap between the two regions.

The collaboration also brings exciting benefits for members of both airlines’ loyalty programs. Kenya Airways Asante Rewards members can now accrue points when flying on China Eastern-operated flights, opening up a world of rewards. They can also enjoy other benefits of using a SkyTeam Partner Airline, enhancing their travel experience. This is just one of the many ways this partnership is designed to show our appreciation for our loyal customers.

To book a codeshare flight, passengers can simply select their desired destination and flight time on either airline’s website or through their preferred travel agency. They will then receive a single ticket and a unified baggage policy for a hassle-free travel experience.
