KUCCPS Extends Deadline Amid Tech, E-citizen Challenge

Yesterday, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) announced an extension of the application deadline for college and university courses. This decision comes as a response to the need to ensure that all eligible students have the opportunity to apply for their desired programs. Let’s explore the details and the technology challenges faced during this process.

The Extended Deadline
In a statement released by KUCCPS CEO Mercy Wahome, the application deadline, initially set for February 26, 2024, has been extended. The primary goal is to accommodate all targeted students and allow them sufficient time to submit their applications. This extension reflects KUCCPS’s commitment to leaving no student behind in pursuing higher education.

The Role of Technology
While the extension is a positive step, it also highlights some technological hurdles faced by both applicants and the placement service. Here are the key points:

  1. Discontinuation of School-Level Applications: KUCCPS has discontinued accepting applications at the school level. Instead, all students must apply directly through the KUCCPS portal. This shift aims to streamline the process and ensure uniformity. However, it has presented challenges for students accustomed to the previous system.
  2. Payment Validation Process: The payment validation process for placement services has become more complex due to migrating government services to the eCitizen platform. While this migration is a positive move toward digitalization, it has delayed validating payments. Students are advised to avoid making double payments to prevent any complications.
  3. Processing Time: KUCCPS acknowledges that the processing time for applications has increased. The service works diligently to validate course choices based on the targeted number of students. Importantly, no applicant will be disadvantaged based on the timing of their submission.

Student Resilience
Despite these challenges, students have demonstrated remarkable resilience. They have adapted to the new application process, navigated the eCitizen platform, and persisted in pursuing their educational goals. KUCCPS’s commitment to providing two revision opportunities after the initial placement exercise further supports students who may need to reapply or adjust their course choices. As KUCCPS continues to enhance its digital infrastructure, it remains crucial to address technology-related bottlenecks promptly. Ensuring a seamless application process is essential for empowering students and promoting equitable access to higher education.
