Loxea has officially launched the BYD range of electric vehicles, becoming the country’s first sole distributor of these globally renowned models. This strategic shift marks Loxea’s diversification into the rapidly growing electric mobility sector, a bold step aimed at driving sustainable growth and transforming Kenya’s transportation landscape. The company will offer the 100 percent electric BYD vehicles for both leasing and outright purchase.
At the launch event, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Investments, Trade & Industry, Hon. Salim Mvurya, praised the initiative as a timely contribution to Kenya’s sustainable development goals. “The government has prioritized the adoption of e-mobility to achieve a number of targets,” he said. These goals include reducing carbon emissions by 32 percent by 2030 and lowering the country’s reliance on oil imports. Mvurya highlighted existing government incentives for electric vehicle (EV) adoption, such as financial and tax breaks for public service vehicles (PSVs) and commercial transporters.
Kenya’s push towards e-mobility is gaining momentum due to supportive government policies, increased environmental awareness, and economic advantages. As part of its Vision 2030 and commitment to the Paris Agreement, the country has placed sustainability and climate change mitigation at the forefront, making EV adoption crucial for achieving these targets.
Loxea Kenya Managing Director, Jennifer Kinyoe, emphasized that this move is part of Loxea’s broader vision to lead in Kenya’s evolving mobility ecosystem. The company will not only offer electric vehicles but also provide a comprehensive suite of services, including electric charging station installations, vehicle maintenance, repair services, and spare parts.
“Diversifying into electric vehicles aligns perfectly with our mission to provide innovative, sustainable mobility solutions to businesses and individuals,” said Kinyoe. “Partnering with BYD, a global leader in electric vehicles, allows us to chart a new path in Kenya’s automotive industry, delivering future-proof solutions.”
The introduction of these vehicles comes at a critical time for Kenya’s transport sector, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Transitioning to EVs is seen as a pivotal step toward achieving the country’s climate goals. By offering zero tailpipe emissions, electric vehicles contribute to reduced air pollution, lower fuel costs, and decreased vehicle maintenance expenses. Kenya’s focus on renewable energy sources such as geothermal, hydro, and solar also enhances the benefits of adopting EVs, making them an ideal match for the country’s green energy ambitions.
CFAO Mobility Group CEO, Arvinder Reel, further highlighted the long-term cost savings and environmental benefits of electric mobility. “With rising fuel costs, EVs offer lower operational expenses and reduced reliance on fossil fuels, helping to lower transportation costs for businesses while contributing to the fight against climate change.”
Three state-of-the-art BYD models—BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, and BYD Dolphin—have been introduced to the Kenyan market, each tailored to meet the diverse needs of local consumers. The BYD Atto 3, a versatile compact SUV, offers a range of up to 515 kilometers, while the sleek BYD Seal sedan boasts an impressive range of 664 kilometers. For everyday commuters, the BYD Dolphin combines affordability and sustainability with a range of 402 kilometers.
In addition to vehicle sales, Loxea has partnered with Knight Energies to enhance Kenya’s EV charging infrastructure. This collaboration will see the installation of new charging stations at key locations across the country, ensuring a smooth and accessible experience for electric vehicle owners. “Our partnership with Knight Energies is designed to accelerate EV adoption by ensuring convenient access to charging stations nationwide,” said Kinyoe.
Florent Montaubin, Managing Director of Loxea Holding, concluded, “BYD’s presence in Kenya signifies our commitment to supporting the country’s green transition. We are excited to contribute to Kenya’s long-term vision for clean energy and environmental conservation.”
As Kenya takes bold steps towards embracing electric mobility, Loxea’s BYD launch stands as a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
