Moi University has confirmed that fifteen of its students sustained injuries following a tragic road accident on the evening of Tuesday, 17 June 2025, along the Kisumu-Bondo Road near the Namba-Kapiyo area.

According to an official statement, the accident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. and involved a University bus (registration KCK 581U) transporting 50 students from the Department of Sociology and Psychology, School of Arts and Social Sciences, who were on an academic field trip. The crash was a result of a multi-vehicle collision involving the university bus, a Toyota Noah, and a Toyota Fortuner.

Preliminary police reports indicate that the Toyota Noah, which was approaching from the opposite direction, lost control and veered into the lane of the university vehicle, leading to the collision.

Out of the 50 students on board, 15 were injured. Three students, who required specialised treatment, were referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu. The remaining twelve sustained minor injuries and were treated at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital. Moi University confirmed that all the injured students are in stable condition and receiving full medical attention.

Two lecturers from the university, who were accompanying the students, also suffered minor injuries and were treated at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital.

“The health, safety, and well-being of our students and staff remain our utmost priority,” the university said. “We have activated all necessary support mechanisms, including counselling, transport, and accommodation assistance to ensure those affected receive full care and support.”

Moi University expressed deep gratitude to the local community and Good Samaritans who provided immediate assistance at the scene. The institution also commended emergency responders and medical teams, along with officials from the Siaya and Kisumu County Governments, for their prompt and effective response.

Tragically, the driver of the Toyota Noah died in the accident. Moi University has extended heartfelt condolences to his family and all others affected by the incident.

The university concluded its statement with a renewed call for heightened road safety awareness. “This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of vigilance and responsibility on our roads, especially on high-risk routes such as the Kisumu-Bondo Road.”

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
