Naivas Marks 36 Years by Planting for the Next Generation

Naivas could have marked its 36th anniversary with speeches, corporate fanfare and a large birthday cake. Instead, Kenya’s biggest supermarket chain took the celebration to Kilimambogo, where it launched the planting of 10,000 trees across eight acres.

It was a fitting choice for a retailer whose business ultimately begins long before goods arrive at a warehouse or products are arranged on a supermarket shelf.

Food retail is anchored in the land. Reliable rainfall, fertile soil, healthy water systems and biodiversity sustain the farms and communities that supply Kenyan households. By investing in the environment, Naivas is also investing in the foundations of the supply chain that has supported its growth for more than three decades.

The exercise, held on Friday, August 14, brought together Naivas employees, business partners, community stakeholders and conservation champions at Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park.

Undertaken in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, the project is intended to restore vegetation, support biodiversity and strengthen the Kilimambogo ecosystem against the effects of climate change.

The scale is notable: 10,000 seedlings planted over eight acres in one of the retailer’s largest single-day environmental initiatives.

More important, however, is what happens after the planting teams leave.

Naivas says its involvement will continue through the watering, monitoring and maintenance of the seedlings. Chief Executive Andreas von Paleske has stressed that the project’s success will be measured not simply by the number planted, but by how many trees survive, mature and contribute to restoring the ecosystem.

That focus on growing trees, not merely planting them, gives the initiative greater weight. Young seedlings require sustained care, particularly during dry periods, if an ambitious planting target is to become a lasting environmental asset.

The project also gives practical expression to the retailer’s “Naivas Ni Kwetu” philosophy. The campaign presents Naivas as a business shaped by Kenyan households and conscious of its responsibility to the country in which it has grown.

Founded in 1990 as a family-run shop in Nakuru, Naivas has developed into a nationwide retail chain serving communities across Kenya. Its expansion has given it considerable reach among consumers, farmers, manufacturers and other local suppliers.
