Safaricom has not yet found a solution for instant iMessage and FaceTime activation for iPhone users in Kenya. A quick look on X reveals a number of dissatisfied Safaricom users who are upset that they cannot activate iMessage and FaceTime instantly using their phone numbers from the tech giant, which aims to ‘Transform Lives’.

Seamless communication is paramount; for iPhone users, iMessage and FaceTime are integral parts of this experience. However, iPhone users in Kenya, particularly those on the Safaricom network, have faced significant challenges when activating these services.

The Activation Dilemma

Many Safaricom users have reported prolonged delays in activating iMessage and FaceTime. While the activation process for these services typically involves a straightforward verification of the user’s phone number via SMS, Safaricom users often find themselves waiting anywhere from a day to a week, or sometimes even longer. This is in stark contrast to users on other networks like Airtel, where the activation process is usually completed within minutes.

Possible Causes and User Experiences

The exact reasons behind these delays remain unclear. Both Apple and Safaricom have not provided detailed explanations for the prolonged activation times. However, several factors could be contributing to this issue:

  1. Network Verification Delays: Verifying a phone number with Apple involves sending an SMS from the user’s device to Apple’s servers. Any delays in sending or receiving this SMS can hinder the activation process.
  2. System Compatibility Issues: There might be underlying compatibility issues between Safaricom’s network infrastructure and Apple’s verification systems, causing delays in the activation process.
  3. User Prerequisites: For successful activation, users must ensure they have mobile data or Wi-Fi, sufficient airtime, and the ability to send SMS messages. Even when these conditions are met, Safaricom users still face delays.
  4. Sabotage: “Safaricom will be so quick to charge you for all their services… but fail a simple task like iMessage activation being the national mobile services company in Kenya…” notes a user on X. Another user notes, “Simply not activating. Every other network activates immediately. None of my friends and relatives with iphones on safaricom can seem to activate imessage. Unfortunately, I do not have the luxury of waiting months like them since its directly tied to my business. I have to move.”

Airtel’s Smooth Activation Process

In stark contrast, Airtel users in Kenya experience a much smoother and faster activation process for iMessage and FaceTime. Reports indicate that Airtel customers typically complete the activation process in less than three minutes. This stark difference highlights a significant disparity in service efficiency between the two networks.

Troubleshooting Steps

Apple provides several troubleshooting steps for users facing activation issues with iMessage and FaceTime:

  • Ensure the device is connected to a cellular data or Wi-Fi network.
  • Verify that the device has the latest version of iOS.
  • Check that the time zone is set correctly.
  • Restart the device and try turning iMessage and FaceTime off and on again.

Despite following these steps, many Safaricom users experience delays, indicating that the issue might be more complex and network-specific. The Kenyan tech community has been actively discussing this issue, with many users sharing their experiences and potential workarounds. Some users have found success by switching to an email address for iMessage and FaceTime activation instead of relying solely on their phone number. Others have suggested that repeatedly toggling the iMessage and FaceTime settings might eventually lead to successful activation, though this is not a guaranteed solution.
