Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., in collaboration with the University of Michigan, has announced the validation of the Samsung Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features by the University of Michigan’s Human Performance & Sport Science Center (HPSSC). The HPSSC is widely respected for its comprehensive research and education in sports, exercise, and human performance. The center’s Michigan Performance Research Laboratory (MiPR) confirmed the Galaxy Watch’s accuracy in measuring key fitness metrics, such as heart rate, sweat loss, VO2 max, and body fat percentage.

A Landmark Collaboration

This collaboration marks a significant step in bringing advanced and precise fitness tracking technology to a wider audience. MiPR’s rigorous testing demonstrated a high correlation between the Galaxy Watch and clinical reference devices, proving the smartwatch’s reliability in fitness monitoring.

Validating Key Fitness Metrics

The study focused on four key metrics crucial for fitness enthusiasts and athletes:

1. Heart Rate:

Heart rate is a fundamental indicator of cardiovascular health and fitness levels. The MiPR study found a 90% correlation between the Galaxy Watch’s heart rate measurements and electrocardiogram (ECG) equipment, the gold standard for heart rate monitoring. This demonstrates the Galaxy Watch’s capability to deliver precise and reliable heart rate data during workouts.

2. Sweat Loss:

Sweat loss tracking helps users manage hydration, crucial for recovery and performance. The Galaxy Watch achieved a 95% correlation in measuring sweat loss over distances ranging from 2.5 km to 20 km, ensuring users receive accurate information on fluid loss during exercise.

3. VO2 Max:

VO2 max measures the maximum amount of oxygen the body can utilize during intense exercise, a key indicator of cardiovascular endurance. The study showed an 82% correlation between the Galaxy Watch and clinical-grade equipment, indicating a strong alignment in VO2 max readings.

4. Body Fat Percentage:

Understanding body composition is essential for assessing fitness and health. The Galaxy Watch demonstrated a 95% correlation with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), the standard diagnostic test for body composition. This accuracy allows users to track their body fat percentage effectively.

Industry and Academic Collaboration

Dr. Hon Pak, Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “We are honoured to be recognized by the Michigan Performance Research Laboratory. Their expertise in wearable technology gives us confidence in the accuracy of the Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking capabilities. We are committed to delivering precise and insightful fitness tracking experiences through strategic partnerships and advanced research.”

Adam Lepley, Director of MiPR and Associate Director of HPSSC, highlighted the benefits of the collaboration: “Our partnership with Samsung exemplifies the power of combining industry-leading expertise with pioneering independent research at the academic level. Together, we can advance scientific discovery and provide information back to consumers that will enhance the use of Samsung’s technology.”

Kenneth Kozloff, Co-director of HPSSC, added, “We are excited to continue our partnership with Samsung to ensure that innovations in wearable technology are accessible and accurate across all segments of the population.”

Enhancing Your Fitness Journey with Galaxy Watch
