Spotify has unveiled its new Global Afrobeats Playlist, celebrating the unstoppable rise of Afrobeats as a worldwide cultural and musical phenomenon. What began as a sound born in West Africa has now become a global powerhouse, shaping not only the music scene but also fashion, dance, and pop culture.
According to Spotify, the move responds directly to Afrobeats’ surging global influence, driven by passionate listeners across continents. The streaming giant’s data reveals explosive growth outside Africa, particularly in Asia. Since 2020, Indonesia has recorded a 4,530% increase in Afrobeats streams, followed by India at 1,650%, the Philippines at 1,492%, and Thailand at 1,370%. In Latin America, the genre’s popularity has soared by 183% year-on-year in 2025.
Spotify also reports a 135% rise in user-generated playlists featuring Afrobeats between 2020 and 2025. Fans are not just listening, they are curating and exporting the sound, spreading its rhythms far beyond the continent.
At the heart of this expansion is Gen Z, whose appetite for discovery has transformed playlists like Hot Hits Naija, African Heat, and Gbedu into global gateways for new listeners. Hot Hits Naija alone has amassed over 20 million global plays, reflecting the genre’s vibrant energy and diversity—from club bangers to smooth fusions.
Benewaah Boateng, Spotify’s Senior Music Editor for Sub-Saharan Africa, notes, “The launch of our Global Afrobeats Playlist isn’t about Spotify leading the charge, it is about us following the fans. The data shows a wave of listener-driven curation, and this playlist is our way of celebrating that momentum.”
With this new playlist, Spotify cements Afrobeats’ place on the world stage, offering a dedicated home for fans and newcomers alike. As the genre continues to evolve and cross borders, one thing is clear: Afrobeats is not just music, it is a global movement.
