Stonebwoy, the “King of Afro-Dancehall,” Talks Unity and Musical Evolution

The journey of Stonebwoy, the self-proclaimed “King of Afro-Dancehall” whose real name is Livingstone Etse Satekla, has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2022, he made headlines by signing with Def Jam Global, a milestone that marked his entry onto the international stage. His latest studio album, “5th Dimension,” released in 2023, soared to number eight on the Billboard World Reggae Charts, showcasing his ability to blend various musical genres seamlessly.

Reflecting on his musical style, Stonebwoy described it as a fusion spanning across reggae, hip hop, and beyond. “It’s a combination of my music just spanned across, you know, my reach. It spans across reggae, hip hop, like the flow is just, is just fire,” he explained, highlighting his dedication to crafting an immersive musical experience for his audience.

With numerous accolades to his name, including 11 honors at the Ghana Music Awards and the title of Best International Act at the Bet Awards in 2015, Stonebwoy’s influence extends far beyond the realms of music charts. His songs have resonated with hundreds of thousands of listeners on streaming platforms like Spotify and Boomplay, with the artist becoming the first Ghanaian to achieve 100 million streams on Audio Mack in 2022.

Central to Stonebwoy’s ethos is his belief in the unity of the black diaspora, a principle that permeates his collaborative efforts with renowned artists such as Beanie Man, Sean Paul, and Keri Hilson. “I think there is a need, you know, to actually blend all these styles of music, which is definitely music of black origin into one,” he expressed, emphasizing the importance of celebrating and unifying diverse musical traditions.

Beyond his musical pursuits, Stonebwoy is deeply committed to social impact. Through the Livingston Foundation, he addresses pressing issues in Ghana, including education and sanitation. As the Global Ambassador for Sanitation for the Ashaiman Municipality, he has spearheaded initiatives to provide clean water to underserved communities, exemplifying his dedication to effecting positive change beyond the realm of entertainment.

Looking ahead, Stonebwoy remains steadfast in his desire to leave a lasting legacy. “I just want to be to leave a legacy behind, you know, continue to impact the world through music,” he shared, underscoring his vision of building a music empire that supports aspiring artists while addressing socio-economic challenges in his homeland.
