The gap between mid-range and premium smartphones is rapidly narrowing as manufacturers bring advanced artificial intelligence, stronger performance and longer software support to more affordable devices.

In the past, choosing a mid-range smartphone often meant accepting significant compromises. Consumers had to settle for slower processors, less capable cameras, basic displays and limited software updates, while the most advanced features remained reserved for flagship models.

That is changing as buyers become more deliberate about value. Beyond the purchase price, consumers increasingly want smartphones that can support work, entertainment, content creation, mobile banking and everyday communication without becoming outdated after only a few years.

Artificial intelligence is among the features driving this shift. Once largely associated with premium smartphones, AI-powered tools are increasingly becoming part of everyday mobile experiences.

Samsung’s new Galaxy A27 5G reflects this transition by offering practical AI features designed for daily use. Circle to Search with Google allows users to search for multiple objects appearing within an image, while Object Eraser helps remove unwanted distractions from photos without requiring a separate editing application.

The phone also features Voice Transcription, which can create transcripts and translate conversations, making it easier for users to record and revisit meetings, lectures and interviews.

Performance has also become an important consideration as smartphones are expected to handle several activities throughout the day, including video calls, social media, streaming, gaming and work-related applications.

Powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 Mobile Platform, the Galaxy A27 5G is designed to support smoother multitasking, faster switching between applications and improved graphics performance.

Consumer expectations around smartphone displays have equally evolved. For many users, the phone is now the main screen for watching videos, following live sports, attending online classes, gaming and consuming social media content.

The Galaxy A27 5G features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Its upgraded Infinity-O design is intended to increase usable screen space and reduce visual distractions, creating a smoother and more immersive viewing experience.

Buyers are also paying greater attention to how long their smartphones will remain secure and functional. Regular operating system upgrades can introduce new capabilities, while security updates help protect personal information as more financial and digital services move online.

Samsung says the Galaxy A27 5G will receive up to six generations of Android operating system and One UI upgrades, as well as up to six years of security updates.

The device also includes Samsung Knox Vault, which uses hardware-backed security to help protect sensitive information.

Smartphone photography has also moved beyond capturing personal memories. Mobile cameras are increasingly being used by online businesses, digital creators and professionals working remotely.

The Galaxy A27 5G comes with an upgraded 12-megapixel front camera designed to produce more natural-looking images across different lighting conditions. AI-powered editing tools also allow users to improve photos without requiring specialised editing skills.

The growth of the mid-range category shows that consumers are no longer judging smartphones only by technical specifications or camera megapixels. They are increasingly considering how well a device fits into their lifestyle, how long it will remain useful and whether it can keep up with their daily demands.

Mid-range smartphones are therefore becoming less defined by compromise and more by accessibility, offering intelligent features, reliable performance, immersive displays and extended software support at a price point available to a broader range of consumers.
