Unemployment remains one of the most pressing challenges in Kenya, particularly in regions with a high population density. Recognising this, 20X Entrepreneur has brought its transformative initiative, Chanuka, Jipange na Opportunities, to Meru County with the aim of empowering local artisans, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and entrepreneurs within the Jua Kali sector. This initiative is not just about skills training—it is a bridge connecting Kenya’s vast informal sector with the government’s Affordable Housing Program.

Meru County: A Hub of Opportunity

With approximately 279 affordable housing units set for construction in Timau Town, North Imenti Constituency, Meru County is positioned to benefit greatly from this initiative. The goal is to ensure that local contractors, suppliers, and artisans access these job opportunities and many other government-supported projects in the county.

Traditionally known as an agricultural hub, Meru County is undergoing economic diversification, opening doors to employment opportunities for students and graduates of tertiary institutions in neighbouring areas. This initiative will help expand the region’s employment landscape, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for its residents.

Unlocking Meru’s Economic Potential

Speaking at the event, Eunice Maina, CEO of 20X Entrepreneur, emphasised Meru’s untapped potential:

“This county holds such great potential for turning around the Kenyan economy. Not only does Meru have the backing of manpower, but it is filled with raw and valuable resources that are not yet tapped into. 20X Entrepreneur is here to help you see these resources and opportunities and guide you on how to grow yourself within the informal sector.”

The initiative, in partnership with Bingwa.ke, The Federation of Jua Kali Associations, and United Manpower (a recruitment company certified by the National Employment Authority – NEA), attracted over 400 attendees, eager to gain skills and job placement opportunities.

Empowering the Informal Sector

Meru County is the latest stop for the Chanuka, Jipange na Opportunities program, following successful editions in Embu, Nakuru, Machakos, Kwale, Homa Bay, Nyeri, and Uasin Gishu-Eldoret. Through hands-on training in technology, financial literacy, and marketing strategies, the program equips workers with the tools to create and sustain profitable businesses in the informal sector.

The initiative calls for increased collaboration between the government, policymakers, financial institutions, and training organisations to tackle unemployment in Meru County. The Affordable Housing Initiative serves as a key platform to transform lives—not only for those seeking housing but also for the skilled and unskilled labourers working on these projects.

As 20X Entrepreneur continues to scale up its impact across the country, Meru residents now have a unique opportunity to build their careers, businesses, and economic resilience. This is more than just a training program; it is a movement towards self-reliance, job creation, and economic transformation.
