Safaricom PLC (NSE: SCOM) has today marked a major milestone, celebrating its 25th anniversary since officially launching operations on 23 October 2000.

Over the past two and a half decades, Safaricom has evolved from a pioneering mobile service provider into a purpose-led technology company, transforming millions of lives through connectivity, mobile money innovations, and impactful social investments.

“Today, we are not only celebrating 25 years of existence, but we are also celebrating 25 years of connecting and transforming the lives of millions of Kenyans and across the region,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC. “From the first mobile call made on our network in 2000 to becoming a key driver of Kenya’s digital economy, our story has been one of innovation, inclusion, and impact. As we look to the future, we remain committed to driving digital transformation, supporting enterprise, and empowering communities to thrive in a connected world.”

Safaricom’s growth has been powered by innovation, partnerships, and the trust of Kenyans. The company recently surpassed 50 million customers on its mobile network in Kenya, reaffirming its position as the country’s leading telecommunications provider.

Through M-PESA, which now serves over 35 million active users, Safaricom has revolutionised financial services, deepening financial inclusion and enabling entrepreneurship across the region. The company has also made significant investments in network expansion, including the rollout of 5G technology, which is enabling faster internet speeds and improving access to essential services such as e-government, health, and education.

Expanding beyond Kenya, Safaricom launched operations in Ethiopia in 2022, introducing M-PESA to the market and supporting Ethiopia’s digital transformation goals. By August 2025, Safaricom Ethiopia had grown to over 10 million customers, marking a key milestone in the company’s regional growth strategy.

Beyond business, Safaricom continues to invest in communities through its Foundations, supporting programmes in health, education, and environmental conservation. These initiatives have positively impacted millions of lives and strengthened Safaricom’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development.

As Safaricom celebrates its Silver Jubilee, the company reaffirms its promise to continue transforming lives and shaping Africa’s digital future.
