Sun King, the world’s largest off grid solar energy company, has announced a major pledge to bring clean power to 200 million people across Africa by 2030. The company made the announcement on 24 November during Global Citizen NOW in Johannesburg, as global leaders gather for the first G20 summit held on African soil.

According to Sun King, 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity. The new plan commits to rolling out more than 50 million additional solar kits between 2026 and 2030, representing over 5.6 billion dollars of equipment and adding 3.8 gigawatts of new solar capacity. This expansion is expected to power homes, schools, health facilities, and small businesses across the continent.

The commitment supports Mission 300, a joint World Bank and African Development Bank initiative aiming to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. Sun King’s target accounts for two thirds of that goal and one third of the global Sustainable Development Goal Seven target for energy access.

Sun King currently operates in 11 African countries and already provides electricity to 50 million people worldwide. The company offers solar systems through a flexible pay as you go model, enabling households to repay loans over up to two years using mobile money, with entry level kits costing as little as 19 cents per day. To date, Sun King has extended 1.4 billion dollars in financing to its customers.

As part of its growth plan, the company expects to deliver one million solar kits per month by the end of the decade, expand its network to more than 1,650 retail stores, and create an additional 45,000 long term jobs across Africa. Sun King says the strategy will accelerate clean energy access, lower reliance on fossil fuels, and unlock social and economic opportunities for underserved communities.
