Airtel Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to improving connectivity and customer experience for its 183.5 million subscribers across 14 African markets through continued investment in network infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite technology.

The telecommunications company says it has added more than 3,250 network sites and laid 3,200 kilometres of fibre over the past year as part of efforts to expand coverage, improve network capacity and support digital and financial inclusion across the continent.

Speaking during Customer Service Week 2026, Airtel Africa Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar said the company is focusing on making its services more accessible, reliable and responsive to customer needs.

“The theme of this year’s events, ‘The Extra Mile,’ is aligned with our unwavering commitment to always go the extra mile for our customers by transforming their experience, listening to them, learning from them and acting on their needs and expectations,” said Taldar.

He added that expanding digital services and connectivity would create more opportunities for individuals, businesses and economies across Africa.

Airtel Africa Turns to Satellite Technology to Connect Rural Areas

Among the company’s recent initiatives is the commercial deployment of direct-to-device satellite connectivity, designed to extend mobile services to underserved rural communities.

The technology allows customers with compatible smartphones to remain connected in areas without traditional mobile network coverage, provided they have a clear view of the sky.

The deployment is expected to help address connectivity challenges in remote parts of Africa, where geographical barriers and the cost of building conventional telecommunications infrastructure have limited network expansion.

Beyond satellite connectivity, Airtel Africa has continued investing in retail outlets, distribution channels and digital platforms to make its services more accessible to customers.

AI Takes Centre Stage in Airtel Africa’s Customer Experience Strategy

Airtel Africa is also turning to artificial intelligence to improve customer service and protect subscribers against unwanted and potentially fraudulent communications.

The company has introduced an AI-powered Spam Alert service, available free of charge to subscribers, which identifies suspected spam SMS messages and provides real-time alerts.

The service is part of Airtel Africa’s broader efforts to strengthen customer protection as more people across the continent adopt mobile financial services and digital platforms.

As part of Customer Service Week activities, Airtel Africa employees will join frontline teams across its 14 markets to interact directly with customers, gather feedback and identify opportunities to improve service delivery.

The company says these engagements will help it better understand changing customer expectations and develop solutions that respond to their needs.

Airtel Africa’s continued investment in network expansion, satellite connectivity and AI reflects the growing importance of reliable telecommunications infrastructure in supporting Africa’s digital economy, particularly as demand for mobile data, digital payments and financial services continues to grow.
