The 7th Edition of the Changamka Kenya Shopping Festival has once again proven itself as a pivotal platform for Kenya’s local manufacturing industry. Held from November 5th to 9th, 2024, at the iconic Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), the Changamka Festival attracted thousands of Kenyans, eager to explore and support locally made products. With over 200 exhibitors, including more than 100 small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this year’s Changamka Festival was a vibrant celebration of Kenyan innovation, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship. Organised by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry, the Changamka Festival aligns with the “Buy Kenya Build Kenya” initiative, promoting local manufacturing as a pathway to sustainable economic growth.

Changamka Festival: More Than a Shopping Event

The Changamka Festival has evolved from a simple shopping experience to a highly anticipated platform for showcasing Kenya’s thriving manufacturing sector. With products ranging from food and furniture to cosmetics and electric bikes, the Changamka Festival challenges the perception that locally produced goods are of lower quality. This year, attendees were pleasantly surprised by the diversity and quality of Kenyan products, experiencing first-hand the shift in the local manufacturing landscape.

Opening the Changamka Festival, Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, Salim Mvurya Mgala, highlighted the vital role of local manufacturing in driving Kenya’s economic transformation. He affirmed the government’s commitment to policies that support local manufacturers, enabling them to meet international standards and compete globally. “Events like the Changamka Festival show that by supporting local manufacturers, we create jobs, drive economic growth, and build a resilient future for Kenya,” Mvurya stated.

Changamka Festival 2024 Draws International Interest

The impact of the Changamka Festival extends beyond Kenya’s borders, with international players taking note. British High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan, emphasized the importance of sustainable growth in Kenya’s manufacturing sector and spoke about initiatives like Manufacturing Africa and Sustainable Urban Economic Development, which aim to support Kenyan products in reaching global markets. The British High Commission partnered with KAM and other prominent entities, including Stanbic Bank, Kenya Breweries Limited, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, to boost the local manufacturing sector’s global reach.

The Changamka Festival offered valuable networking opportunities for exhibitors, attendees, and industry stakeholders, fostering collaborations to advance Kenya’s manufacturing sector. Through these partnerships, Kenyan manufacturers gain insights into leveraging technology and sustainable practices, further positioning them as key contributors to economic growth.

Changamka Festival Challenges Misconceptions and Strengthens Local Pride

A significant mission of the Changamka Festival is to address the misconception that Kenyan-made products are less competitive than imports. By offering consumers an immersive experience of quality, creativity, and affordability in Kenyan products, the Changamka Festival encourages national pride and support for the “Buy Kenya Build Kenya” strategy. More Kenyans now recognise that choosing locally manufactured goods is not only a matter of pride but also a way to contribute to the country’s economic resilience.

KAM Ag. CEO Tobias Alando, remarked on the importance of the festival, saying, “Kenya’s manufacturing sector is a cornerstone for job creation, economic resilience, and national prosperity. The Changamka Festival stands as a testament to the potential of Kenyan products and a reminder of the power of buying local.”

Celebrating Excellence in Kenyan Manufacturing at Changamka Festival

This year’s Changamka Festival celebrated top exhibitors with an awards ceremony. Dr. Mattress and Alladin tied for first place, while Bidco, Mr. Berry’s Zuri Sweets, and Booch shared the third position. These brands were honoured for their creativity, innovation, presentation, and popularity, reinforcing the strength of Kenyan-made products. Such recognition at the Changamka Festival reflects the hard work and commitment of Kenyan manufacturers to delivering world-class products, both locally and internationally.

Changamka Festival: Shaping the Future of Kenya’s Economy

The Changamka Festival 2024 has showcased the resilience and potential of Kenya’s manufacturing sector, even amid economic challenges. By bringing together diverse industry players, consumers, and policymakers, the Changamka Festival has created a fertile environment for discussions, partnerships, and strategies that will shape Kenya’s manufacturing landscape for years to come. The festival also highlighted the role of Kenyan consumers in supporting a self-sufficient economy by embracing the “Buy Kenya Build Kenya” philosophy.

As the Changamka Festival concludes, the message to the public is clear: supporting local businesses is an essential step toward creating a sustainable economic future for Kenya. The Changamka Festival is more than a marketplace—it is a movement that inspires national pride, strengthens local industry, and fosters economic resilience.

The Changamka Festival 2024 was a resounding success, not only for exhibitors but for the entire nation. As Kenyans continue to invest in their own economy by choosing Kenyan-made products, they pave the way for a resilient and prosperous future, driven by the power and potential of local manufacturing.
