Majid Al Futtaim Retail, the exclusive operator of Carrefour in Kenya, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Food Banking Kenya (FBK) to redistribute surplus, safe, and edible food to vulnerable communities across the country.
The partnership, which aligns with Majid Al Futtaim’s sustainability and community engagement commitments, aims to curb food waste, support food security, and reduce environmental impact. Through the initiative, surplus baked goods will be collected and distributed daily, while dry groceries such as rice, cereals, and lentils will reach verified charitable organisations within four days.
Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, said the partnership reflects the company’s mission to advance responsible retail and social impact.
“This partnership underscores Majid Al Futtaim’s commitment to responsible retail and to creating a positive impact in the communities we serve. We know that for various reasons, food often goes to waste, yet much of it can be redistributed and repurposed to support those in need. By transforming surplus into support, we are reducing waste while strengthening Kenya’s food security,” he said.
Under the agreement, Carrefour Kenya will identify surplus products that meet strict food safety standards. Food Banking Kenya will handle the collection, sorting, and distribution of these products through accredited charitable organisations nationwide.
John Gathungu, Executive Director at Food Banking Kenya, noted that the collaboration will extend the reach of food assistance to more vulnerable groups.
“Partnering with Carrefour in Kenya expands our reach to ensure safe, nutritious food reaches the most vulnerable communities. This collaboration proves that surplus can nourish communities in need, showing how responsible retailing delivers real impact,” he said.
The partnership is projected to redistribute about 20 tonnes of surplus food every year, supporting thousands of families affected by food insecurity.
